How to Make Your Own Beauty Products from Scratch Let's keep things simple this week. When it comes to personal-care products, we are big believers in streamlining what you use—see "Eight Products You Think You Need But Don't" for a refresher—buying less in general, and getting creative. We have both always loved experimenting in our kitchens and our bathrooms, checking ingredients in products we love, isolating the main ones, and then trying them on their own. Simple body scrub Many body scrubs, even the ones that claim to be sugar- or salt-based, actually contain beads made out of polyethylene, which is environmentally deplorable (it all goes down the drain, remember)—to say nothing of the preservatives, fragrance, penetration enhancers, and sulfates that typically bulk up these products. Honey face wash One-ingredient eye liner For the ladies (or the gents with a flair for the dramatic) this is as easy as it gets: Grab a capsule of activated charcoal, which you can get at most pharmacies and any health food store. Shorts-Lace Trim The lace trend is still going strong. I made a pair of lace tiered shorts last year (here), and that tutorial still continues to be one of my most read posts. I decided that I would update it, and love crochet lace trim against denim. So great for summer! Stay tuned for another DIY lace short next week. Full tutorial after the break... Materials: - denim shorts (here, here, and here) - crochet lace trim (I bought mine from F&S in Santa Monica) - scissors - fabric glue (here) Steps: 1. Check Out More Swellmayde DIY's: HERE

Denim-tie dye (floral-y) This DIY kick starts my tie dye week (another version to come) and just might be my most favorite DIY yet!! As I was perusing the latest Elle magazine, I saw an ad for Paige denim. It was for a beautiful pair of tri-colored tie dye jeans (Paige Toulouse Verdugo Skinny). Materials: - white skinny denim (I bought an inexpensive pair from Target here ) - RIT dye (denim blue, wine bordo, and petal pink) - sponge brush Steps: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. NOTE on Washing: I recommend setting the dye before washing. shorts- floral stencil (DIY) Now that spring has officially rolled around, my love for florals is in it's prime! I've been experimenting with stencils quite often lately, so I couldn't help but make a flower printed garment for the season. The great part of this project is that you can use any stencil you'd like (leaves? daisies? filigree?) I tend to mix girly and not-so-girly concepts together; the design is feminine, so I purposely found a pair of jeans that were a bit loose fitting. Keep reading to see how I made it: Supplies: - Large flower/rose stencil (I bought mine at Michael's) - Jeans - White fabric paint - Flat sponge brush - Masking tape & thin paintbrush 1) Tape the stencil onto the jeans. 2) Apply paint with the brush. Having a fairly light hand might be more ideal for this project. 3) Let dry, and repeat on random areas on the jeans. 4) Try adding flowers on the sides, overlapping the seam. 5) If you would like, take a paintbrush and draw pointed ovals - also known as leaves!
