Future of Libraries in the Digital Age A redesign of the Mid-Manhattan branch by Dutch firm Mecanoo and Beyer Blinder Belle, for example, will add seating, services, and public space to the city’s largest circulating library. Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall. TenHoor praised Mecanoo’s design: “There is room for research, and for the various kinds of work that are undertaken in a library today, but also preservation of many of the older library typologies that people love,” she said. When redesigning libraries, the NYPL seeks a mix of informal and formal seating, flexible spaces, more outlets and internet capacity, and natural light, according to Honig—features that can be seen at the recently revamped Washington Heights branch and the Stapleton branch in Staten Island.

Hillary Ostlund is a Manager for the City of Hillsboro’s Library department. She currently leads the library’s Cultivate team, focused on staff development, training, and employee engagement.

How Helsinki Built ‘Book Heaven’ You might say, “Yes, of course I love the library.” We do, too. But I’m not sure anyone loves libraries quite like the Finns do. In a country that boasts one of the world’s highest literacy rates, the arrival of the new central library in Helsinki last year was a kind of moon-landing-like moment of national bonding. The €98 million facility, whose opening in December 2018 marked the centenary of Finnish independence, has since been widely celebrated internationally as a model reimagining of these critical pieces of social infrastructure. At the CityLab DC conference this week, Tommi Laitio, Helsinki’s executive director for culture and leisure, offered his own, more personal take on exactly why this building is so important to Finland’s future. The future of many school libraries is anchored to makerspaces Not long ago the New Milford High School library in New Jersey was pretty traditional. It had tall stacks of books and old wooden tables that didn’t move easily. It was underutilized.

Weeding is Fundamental On October 17th, 1989, the Oakland A’s were playing the San Francisco Giants in the World Series, but just as the game was kicking off—the television broadcast cut out. When the signal came back, it was no longer the baseball game. These were the early minutes of the Loma Prieta earthquake, which struck near Santa Cruz. It was the first major earthquake ever to be broadcast live on national TV. Part of the Bay Bridge had been destroyed. There were fires, fallen buildings, and widespread power outages.

New Libraries The location of the Library/ Learning Resource Centre (LRC), its size and its environment are crucial in ensuring its effective use by students and staff. The design and size of the school library is indicative of the status given to the library as a whole school resource. If it is one of the first things both visitors and school staff and pupils see on entering the school it can reinforce the message that independent learning and reading are given a high profile. The SLA recommends that the use of the LRC to support learning and teaching should be planned within a framework of whole-school, cross-curricular delivery of the curriculum. The learning resources provided within the LRC will be in many formats to ensure that the curriculum is fully supported and that multiple learning styles are accomodated. We recommend that 10% of the school population or a whole class (whichever is the greater number) should be able to be seated within the LRC at any one time.

4 Things Affecting Library Learning Commons 1. Make It Student-Centered Students are the owners of the learning commons. Forming a user advisory board is a good way to communicate and generate ideas about how students want to use their space. In remodeling our own school library to be a learning commons, we asked students to vote on their favorite cabinet and countertop materials.
