92-Year-Old Ms. Opal Lee Walks It Like She Talks It To Make Juneteenth A National Holiday - Blavity News It took two and a half years, after the Emancipation Proclamation, for Black folks in Texas to learn about their freedom. When General Gordon Granger delivered Texans the liberating message on June 19, 1865, the date became a historical marker. Now, known as Juneteenth or Freedom Day, Americans won't find it on any national calendar. Though many have worked to change this careless omission, nobody stands out more than 92-year-old community leader and Texan Ms.

The Book of Genesis, part 1: God created Genesis 1 and 2 must be among the most hotly debated texts in the Bible. But our obsession with whether and how they can be reconciled with scientific descriptions of the beginning of the universe is distorting our understanding of where these "creation narratives" fit into the wider concerns of the Book of Genesis. In its printed form, Genesis has 50 chapters, only one and a bit of which directly concern the origins of the universe. They are there to set the scene for what follows. Genesis is, from beginning to end, a theological book.

Review: James McAvoy’s Rapping Cyrano Dazzles With Words As usual, Cyrano courts Roxane, who is as word-crazy as he is, by proxy for the tongue-tied Christian. Freed of the tethering constraints of period scenery (including that famous balcony), the deception feels newly and unusually convincing. In the scenes of verbal lovemaking, the performers look not at each other but straight ahead. Cyrano, pretending to be Christian, says to Roxane: “Let’s be like the blind / and see each other in the dark spaces / of each other’s mind.” The pulsing susurrus in McAvoy’s delivery of such lines makes this the most erotic “Cyrano” I have seen. It makes perfect sense that toward the end, amid harrowing scenes of soldiers under siege during battle, even Christian feels the sensuous tug of Cyrano’s words. Why do we have creation myths? The other week, the New Scientist published a lengthy report about an Amazonian tribe called the Piraha. They are, it is believed, unique: they have virtually no notion of time, little oral history, almost no art, and the simplest kinship system known. They are also believed to be the only society with no creation myth. But why are there not more like them? The simplistic explanation is that everyone - apart from a relatively small number of South Americans and decadent western atheists - believes the world to have been created, and so needs a story to explain how. But the fact that large numbers of people, even the vast majority, believe something is not a good enough reason to suppose it is true.

7 ways to feel happier during the coronavirus pandemic Americans are the unhappiest they've been in 50 years, according to the COVID Response Tracking Study, conducted in late-May by NORC at the University of Chicago. Only 14% of respondents said they were very happy, down 31% from the same period in 2018. During such painful times, the idea of cultivating personal happiness might seem trivial — selfish, even — but it might just be more important now than ever before. Download the TODAY app for the latest coverage on the coronavirus outbreak “All of this negative energy taxes the mind, body and spirit,” says Carla Marie Manly, a clinical psychologist and author of “Joy From Fear: Create The Life Of Your Dreams By Making Fear Your Friend.” “As such, it’s vital to intentionally counteract this toxic, fearful energy with a conscientious investment in creating happiness.”

The annual World Happiness Report has just been released, timed to the UN's annual International Day of Happiness on March 20. For the third year in a row, Finland has placed at the top of the list as the happiest country in the world, with Denmark coming in second, followed by Switzerland, which pushed Norway out of the top three this year. Most sheep have a fleece weighing just under ten pounds, with the exception usually reaching fifteen pounds, maximum.
