It's more than just typing

It's more than just typing
While schools have worked hard to integrate computers into the classroom and many do a great job teaching students how they work, many schools do not even consider teaching the art/science of using a keyboard. "Many teachers think it takes nothing to teach keyboarding, but they are wrong," said teacher Carla Cruzan. "Can anyone teach a science or math course?" Once upon a time (not so very long ago), many high school students took a course called typing. Times have changed. Unfortunately, as schools have concentrated on teaching students how to use computers to obtain and produce information, they have paid little attention to teaching them how to type on the keyboard quickly, accurately, and with correct technique. "What I am seeing now," computer science teacher Carla Cruzan told Education World, "is that there is no getting around the problem of young children being placed in front of keyboards. So how young is too young? That expert "made a believer out of me," Nansen said.

Assistive Technology Assistive technologies enable people to communicate, receive instruction, learn, play, move about, achieve, and be independent (Blackstone, 1990). These technologies have been used to enhance the abilities of people as part of early intervention services, in educational and recreational programs, for employment, rehabilitation, and for independent living (Solarz, 1990) According to the Technology-related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988 (Tech Act), an Assistive technology device is "any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities."
