What Books Would You Recommend Someone Read to Improve their General Knowledge of the World? Inspired by a reader’s question to me, I thought I’d ask our followers on Facebook and Twitter for an answer to the question: What books would you recommend someone read to improve their general knowledge of the world. I must say the number and quality of the responses overwhelmed me. The box Amazon just delivered reminds me that I ordered 9 books off this list. Here is the list of what 55,000 of the smartest readers on the internet came up with, and what a list it is!

Deep Impact NASA's Deep Impact probe hits Comet Tempel 1 (NASA) Deep Impact is the name of a NASA space mission whose primary objective was to study Comet Tempel 1 (a.k.a. 9P/Tempel). It was launched on 12 January, 2005, and the smart impactor crashed into the comet on 4 July, 2005. Oh, and yes, Deep Impact is also the name of a movie … but the two have no connection (the science team came up with their name independently of the Hollywood studio), other than that they both concern a comet!

The Human Body: Sites, Activities & Projects Human Body Picturing the Body Learn about common techniques for peering inside the body in order to diagnose disease and injury. Recycling for Kids These days it is recognised that it is important that children know how to help the environment by recycling, and schools do a really good job! Consequently children are often the instigators and policemen of recycling in the home. If they are not, are if you think the children you know need a little nudge in the right direction, you can find plenty of inspiration on our Recycling pages! Teach kids the three R's: Reduce - reduce the amount of things you buy and use and you will have less to throw awayReuse - keep using the same things as many times as you canRecycle - find new ways to use old things If you are doing a project on recycling or just want to get your children thinking about the...

Scientists detect signatures of life remotely It could be a milestone on the path to detecting life on other planets: Scientists under the leadership of the University of Bern and of the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) PlanetS detect a key molecular property of all living organisms from a helicopter flying several kilometers above ground. The measurement technology could also open up opportunities for remote sensing of the Earth. Left hands and right hands are almost perfect mirror images of each other. But whatever way they are twisted and turned, they cannot be superimposed onto each other. This is why the left glove simply won't fit the right hand as well as it fits the left.

What's in the heart of a comet? What's in the heart of a comet? A comet's nucleus, or heart, is the solid chunk of something in the center of its fuzzy coma. As it approaches the Sun, some of its surface boils off and creates a long tail. But what IS inside a comet's nucleus? Marshmallows? Chewy caramel? NOVA Can Wind Turbines Make You Sick? Residents living in the shadows of wind turbines say the sound is making them sick. But so far the science isn't there. New method could reveal what genes we might have inherited from Neanderthals Using neural networks, researchers from the University of Copenhagen have developed a new method to search the human genome for beneficial mutations from Neanderthals and other archaic humans. These humans are known to have interbred with modern humans, but the overall fate of the genetic material inherited from them is still largely unknown. Among others, the researchers found previously unreported mutations involved in core pathways in metabolism, blood-related diseases and immunity. Thousands of years ago, archaic humans such as Neanderthals and Denisovans went extinct. But before that, they interbred with the ancestors of present-day humans, who still to this day carry genetic mutations from the extinct species. Over 40 percent of the Neanderthal genome is thought to have survived in different present-day humans of non-African descent, but spread out so that any individual genome is only composed of up to two percent Neanderthal material.

Space Probes A space probe is an unpiloted, unmanned device sent to explore space and gather scientific information. A space probe is launched from Earth with a set of scientific instruments and tools used to study the atmosphere and composition of space and other planets, moons, or celestial bodies. A probe may operate far out in space, or it may orbit or land on a planet or a moon. It may make a one-way journey, or it may bring samples and data back to Earth.
