World Bank won’t fund coal-related projects in India Debjoy Sengupta, ET Bureau Jul 31, 2015, 05.15AM IST (The World Bank has made a…) KOLKATA: The World Bank has made a U-turn on its stance that coal is the backbone of the India's energy economy 17 years after it agreed to lend $1.03 billion to Coal India along with a Japanese lending agency. The international lender has now decided not to invest in any coal-related project, be it a coal mine or a thermal power plant. "The World Bank Group will only in 'rare circumstances' provide financial support for new greenfield coal power generation projects; these 'rare circumstances' refer to considerations such as the country in question having no other feasible alternatives to meet the basic energy needs of its people," a World Bank spokesperson told ET. Coal continues to fuel 70 per cent of India's power requirements. Coal India took $484.4 million loan between 1998 and 2004, which have since been repaid.

TPP Transparency for Healthcare Annex (on June 10, 2015) Today, Wednesday 10 June 2015, WikiLeaks publishes the Healthcare Annex to the secret draft "Transparency" Chapter of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP), along with each country's negotiating position. The Healthcare Annex seeks to regulate state schemes for medicines and medical devices. It forces healthcare authorities to give big pharmaceutical companies more information about national decisions on public access to medicine, and grants corporations greater powers to challenge decisions they perceive as harmful to their interests. Expert policy analysis, published by WikiLeaks today, shows that the Annex appears to be designed to cripple New Zealand's strong public healthcare programme and to inhibit the adoption of similar programmes in developing countries.

Business Review Australia | Australian Business News | News for Australia Tony Abbott defends 2030 emissions target criticised as 'pathetically' low | Australia news Tony Abbott says his new emission reduction goal is in line with comparable countries and will cost the economy around $4bn in 2030, but climate groups say it is “pathetically inadequate” and far less than Australia’s share of the cuts needed to stop global warming at 2C. Abbott said the new target – to reduce emissions by 26% to 28% of 2005 levels by 2030 – was “foursquare in the middle” of the pledges comparable economies will take to the United Nations meeting in Paris in December. “It’s better than Japan. But conservationists said the target left Australia looking like a laggard – because measured on like-for-like basis, the US had promised cuts of around 41% by 2030, the European Union by around 34% based on 2005 levels, Canada of 30% and Japan – struggling with the impact of the Fukushima disaster on its nuclear industry – 25% on 2005 levels. “The modelling shows that what we have in mind is not cost-free to the economy.
