Three charts on: who is the typical investor in the Australian property market? Contrary to the image a property investor might conjure up - a wealthy full-time property speculator - most residential investors in Australia don’t actually rely on it as their primary source of income. In reality, Australia’s residential investment market is dominated by people who, having bought their own home, have moved onto buying an investment property. These small-scale investors own 83% of all investment properties. Previous research shows that real estate investors tend to be married, wealthy males with high income and full-time employment. Blockchain start-ups urge RBA to start eAUD experiments Blockchain developers have urged the Reserve Bank to start experimenting with digital-dollar technologies rather than just observing them. RBA governor Philip Lowe said the central bank was reluctant to issue a new form of digital banknote - the eAUD - for use in retail markets given the arrival in February of the 'new payments platform'. But it remained an "open question" whether a digital Australian dollar could be used in private payment systems, although a convincing case had not yet been made out, he said. "My working hypothesis here is that such a case could develop, although we need to work through a range of complex operational and policy questions," Dr Lowe told the Australian Payment Summit. Start-ups working with distributed ledgers want to make payments using a fiat currency rather than using volatile cryptocurrencies or routing payments back to the traditional banking system.
Agriculture blockchain startup AgriDigital raises $5.5m in Square Peg led round Square Peg Capital has invested in Australian blockchain start-up, AgriDigital, in a $5.5 million Series A funding round it said would help expansion plans into North America. AgriDigital has built a private blockchain for supply chain finance. It has over 1300 users and more than 1.6 million tonnes of grain has been transacted over the cloud-based system since its first deal in December 2016, involving $360 million in grower payments. Square Peg Capital partner Tony Holt said the firm was attracted to AgriDigital because of the leadership team, and the company's solution for simplifying supply chains, which he described as "really complex, distributed and with multiple participants, which means there is huge room for improvement".

Andrew Sullivan: My Distraction Sickness — and Yours I was sitting in a large meditation hall in a converted novitiate in central Massachusetts when I reached into my pocket for my iPhone. A woman in the front of the room gamely held a basket in front of her, beaming beneficently, like a priest with a collection plate. I duly surrendered my little device, only to feel a sudden pang of panic on my way back to my seat. If it hadn’t been for everyone staring at me, I might have turned around immediately and asked for it back. But I didn’t.

BNP Paribas acquires Compte Nickel French fintech startup Compte Nickel was acquired by French bank BNP Paribas yesterday. I couldn’t nail down the price but I’ve heard that it was quite significant. Compte Nickel was one of the leading fintech startups in France. You can open the equivalent of a current bank account in thousands of tobacco shops in just a few minutes. Compte Nickel gives you an IBAN and a MasterCard for €20 per year. This is quite different from the typical banking experience in France as you usually have to make an appointment and talk with a bank manager to open an account.
Science Organisations Cancel Lawrence Krauss Events After Sexual Harassment Allegations For years, women have quietly warned each other to stay away from Lawrence Krauss, the internationally lauded theoretical physicist and torchbearer for the secular, sceptic, and atheist movement, according to a BuzzFeed News investigation published last week. Now, multiple organisations have canceled events featuring Krauss and disinvited him from others. The exhaustively reported BuzzFeed article by reporters Peter Aldhous, Azeen Ghorayshi, and Virginia Hughes, details women's claims of sexual misconduct against Krauss that extend back more than a decade and range from sexist comments to female coworkers at Arizona State University, where Krauss is currently employed, to nonconsensual groping and harassment of women half his age. These alleged incidents reportedly led to official complaints filed by the women to a long list of universities and organisations Krauss has affiliated himself with over the years. As of Friday, though, the fallout was coming quick.
