In technical terms, FastCGI is a language independent, scalable, open extension to CGI that provides high performance without the limitations of server specific APIs. CGI is a protocol for web servers to execute dynamic web programs. CGI creates new processes for each request which makes CGI programs simple to implement, but limits efficiency and scalability. At high loads, CGI process creation overhead becomes significant.
