Tibetan Breathing for Health What is Tibetan Breathing? Tibetan Breathing is self-help healing technique that expands your lungs and increases oxygen in your blood. All your organs (and your brain) benefit from more oxygen and work better. Daily practice of this breathing program has been shown to calm the nervous system, regulate heart activity, relax muscles and spasms, oxygenate the blood, reduce blood pressure, stimulate digestion and help to clean the body of toxins. How to perform Tibetan Breathing Sit comfortably with your spine straight and your feet apart and flat on the floor. This simple breathing exercise establishes an equilibrium between positive and negative currents throughout the body. You can perform Tibetan Breathing while sitting, laying down or even while walking (keep your hands in your pockets). Note: this Tibetan Breathing Technique is a very powerful energizer which should not be overdone. Also see our recommendations for the 5 Tibetan Rites of Rejuvenation
How Memory Works How Memory Works PBS Airdate: August 25, 2009 NEIL DeGRASSE TYSON: Most of us hold in our minds, memories of our lives, so vivid that when we recall them, they seem real and indelible. As correspondent Chad Cohen reports, researchers are discovering the precise molecules that can create memories, as well as the molecules that can erase them forever. CHAD COHEN (Correspondent): This is the brain that, more than any other in history, has allowed scientists to make sense of your brain. With H.M.' JACOPO ANNESE (The Brain Observatory/University of California, San Diego): You can imagine the brain being like a book, and our tissue slices are the pages of this book. CHAD COHEN: It's a story that begins with epilepsy, epilepsy so severe that by 1953, H.M. had reached his breaking point. Alzheimer’s vaccine trial a success A study led by Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reports for the first time the positive effects of an active vaccine against Alzheimer's disease. The new vaccine, CAD106, can prove a breakthrough in the search for a cure for this seriously debilitating dementia disease. The study is published in the scientific journal Lancet Neurology. Alzheimer's disease is a complex neurological dementia disease that is the cause of much human suffering and a great cost to society. According to the World Health Organisation, dementia is the fastest growing global health epidemic of our age. There is currently no cure for Alzheimer's disease, and the medicines in use can only mitigate the symptoms. The new treatment, which is presented in Lancet Neurology, involves active immunisation, using a type of vaccine designed to trigger the body's immune defence against beta-amyloid.
Activated Charcoal: Medicine of the Egyptians, Greeks, and Native Americans Eating charcoal sounds about as appetizing as scarfing down some black, charred remains of a Saturday BBQ, but activated charcoal is a whole other animal. Activated charcoal is used as a detox agent to absorb a host of heavy metals, chemicals, and pharmaceutical drug remains that flow through your blood stream and cause a hindrance to your best health. Activated charcoal absorbs the toxins from your body and then, since it is not absorbed by the body, the toxins along with the charcoal are expelled, leaving you cleaner and more toxin-free. The Numerous Benefits of Activated Charcoal Charcoal is “activated” because it is made to have a very small particle size. To understand just how effective this substance is at absorbing toxins, one standard 50-gram dose of activated charcoal has the surface area of 10 football fields. Hippocrates, the Greek physician considered the father of natural medicine, used activated carbon to cure many patients. Source: Natural Society Related:
Brain Physiology The brain and the rest of the nervous system are composed of many different types of cells, but the primary functional unit is a cell called the neuron. All sensations, movements, thoughts, memories, and feelings are the result of signals that pass through neurons. Neurons consist of three parts. The neuron is usually surrounded by many support cells. Scientists have learned a great deal about neurons by studying the synapse, the place where a signal passes from the neuron to another cell. Some Key Neurotransmitters at Work Acetylcholine is called an excitatory neurotransmitter because it generally makes cells more excitable. GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is called an inhibitory neurotransmitter because it tends to make cells less excitable. Serotonin is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that constricts blood vessels and brings on sleep. Neurological Disorders When the brain is healthy it functions quickly and automatically. 8 Things Everybody Ought to Know About Concentrating - StumbleUpon “Music helps me concentrate,” Mike said to me glancing briefly over his shoulder. Mike was in his room writing a paper for his U.S. History class. On his desk next to his computer sat crunched Red Bulls, empty Gatorade bottles, some extra pocket change and scattered pieces of paper. In the pocket of his sweat pants rested a blaring iPod with a chord that dangled near the floor, almost touching against his Adidas sandals. Mike made a shift about every thirty seconds between all of the above. Do you know a person like this? The Science Behind Concentration In the above account, Mike’s obviously stuck in a routine that many of us may have found ourselves in, yet in the moment we feel it’s almost an impossible routine to get out of. When we constantly multitask to get things done, we’re not multitasking, we’re rapidly shifting our attention. Phase 1: Blood Rush Alert When Mike decides to start writing his History essay, blood rushes to his anterior prefrontal cortex. Phase 2: Find and Execute
