Social Source Commons Problem Statement A great range of resources exist to inform software selection, use and support in NPOs and NGOs, but they are not well connected, and rarely share common formats or metadata. To date, there is no place for comprehensively mapping the full range of "what's out there" and "who's using what", and in turn aggregating relevant information for tools and categories of tools. There is also no general platform for sharing collective software knowledge in geographic, subsector and other specialized contexts. Anecdotal inquiry and formal research both indicate that software selection in the NPO/NGO sector is usually done by "asking friends what they use". Such "social network" methodology has the built-in advantage of establishing de facto support networks, as those same friends and allies who recommend tools are only a phone call or email away for questions.

Power of Google = algorithm. Social life is not algorithmic... :-)) by reel Oct 20
Google is good as long as it is info it wants you to find :) ... "filter bubbles" may explain a little better... I believe they are controlling information flow by healingshores Oct 19
Google certainly has the best search algorithm and provides the best results over the domain it searches. I've added a few other searches that are just a bit different, for instance greplin searches within your own private social media data, which google does not have access to. e.g. it will search all your facebook messges, your delicious bookmarks, linkedin posts, twitter posts, google mail, dropbox, and lots more. Its a personal data search. It was created by an ex google guy... Perhaps google will buy them. The internet archive also does a kind of search google does not provide. It search in the past - so you can look at what web pages of different companies used to look like 5, 10, 15 years ago. Its a useful research tool if you are looking at what has changed. Sometimes also if you know you want a specifc kind og result, its better to go to an aggregator for just that, like wikipedia or howstuffworks as long as you are reasonably confident in the quality and breadth of content. by markburnett Sep 19
