Confusing words: BIG or LARGE, HIGH or TALL For many learners of English the slight differences between the words BIG vs. LARGE and HIGH vs. TALL are very difficult to understand. I recently read an article that suggested that children are not learning disabled until they attend school and fail to adequately learn to read and write. The author referred to this as “school-induced learning disabilities.” The article went on to suggest that if those same kids were simply taught the way they learned, they would not only not need special education services, but they would not need a label of “learning disabled,” or as in most cases of learning disabilities, dyslexia. If you ask parents of a child who is eventually identified with dyslexia, they will tell you that their child was a normal, happy, curious, intellectually-capable child from birth to kindergarten; and for those bright, curious preschoolers who were not identified with dyslexia and did not receive the appropriate intervention, something slowly changed. I understand that for educators who have admirably dedicated their lives to educating children, this is a difficult pill to swallow.

I wanted some sort of hands-on manipulative to keep the children engaged and make the concept of weather more tangible, so I decided to try my hand at making some simple weather sensory bottles. Speakeasy - Easy Going The Tower of London is surrounded by a sea of red poppies to commemorate the 888,246 British and Colonial dead during the First World War. The ceramic poppies were “planted” from 4 August, 100 years from the beginning of the war, till 11 November, the day when the final Armistice is commemorated. Here you can see Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife Samantha visiting the installation with a "Beefeater". On this video you can see how the artists made the poppies.

Reading Programs Focus on skills that underlie reading "There are no universally effective programs, but here are knowable principles that need to be incorporated in all programs about how we teach written language." Some were created specifically for dyslexia, like the Orton-Gillingham approach.
