A Quick Guide to Starting a Beehive © Jaymi Heimbuch via Flickr With Colony Collapse Disorder consistently chipping away at our global honeybee population, the art of beekeeping has become more important than ever. So when I found out my local newspaper--the San Francisco Chronicle--had a rooftop beehive, I just had to see it for myself as I've been curious about starting my own hive for a few years now. I do hope what I learned on my visit inspires you to start your own apiary. Since 2009, colony loss levels reached 29-percent, according to the USDA, and they increased to 34-percent come 2010. Meredith May is one of the main beekeepers over at the Chronicle and she gave us a do-it-yourself tour of their rooftop beehive. Now, let's start beekeeping! What You'll Need Smoker - Any size will do but the buzz on the street is that the larger ones are easier to keep lit. Veil - You are going to need some sort of protective garments like a veil and a jacket. Bee brush - No, this isn't for grooming the bees! Mail Order Brides Bees

It consists of two parts: entry passage and flower pot outside, and glass vessel containing an array of honeycomb frames, inside. The glass shell filters light to let through the orange wavelength which bees use for sight. This is a sustainable, environmentally friendly product concept that has direct educational effects. Underground House With Green Roof Approved In Protected Area Next To Achaeological SIte Architizer/via OK, I am deeply conflicted about this one. The UK has very strict greenbelt and cultural heritage landscape rules to preserve heritage views and historic sites, and to control suburban sprawl. Recently there have been a bunch of attempts to bust the rules by using green roofs and underground construction to hide the buildings, and to qualify for a Clause 11 of Planning Policy Statement 7 or PPS7 which the Architects Journal defines as the ‘exceptional quality and innovative nature of the design’ of a proposed building may provide ‘special justification for granting planning permission.’ I have previously covered other attempts, including the Teletubby House and an underground hotel and golf course. I concluded that Green Roofs + Green Belts = Greenwash Then there is the issue of who is really gaining from these restrictions. Hawkes Architecture /via Then there is the issue of the actual house itself, which is pretty wonderful from a green design point of view.
Privly · Welcome Vertech Limited Bridge,WorldArchitectureNews, Vertech Limited, Peeblesshire, Urban Design,Sustainability When sending your plastic bottles for recycling, where do you imagine they’ll end up -perhaps as another bottle or even a plastic bag? One innovative Welsh company have just completed a European-first - by turning 50 tonnes of waste plastic into a record 90ft Thermoplastic road bridge suitable for heavy goods vehicles. Vertech Limited, a relatively new start-up company have partnered with Dawyck Estates, specialist bridge designer Cass Hayward LLP, Cardiff University’s School of Engineering, Rutgers University’s AAMIPP Department and Axion International - with support from the Welsh Assembly Government - to make the project a reality. The bridge spans the River Tweed at Easter Dawyck in Peeblesshire and forms part of the historic John Buchan Way. It was built off-site and assembled in just 4 days by an outstanding team from Glendinning Groundworks Ltd, a local Peeblesshire contractor, and 10 Field Squardron (Air Support), Royal Engineers. Money for the Masses Earlier this month, a Silicon Valley mobile startup called Loopt was acquired for $43 million. Even though Loopt had only a relatively modest user base, it was well known among the tech cognoscenti. But the same wasn’t true of the acquiring company. Who exactly, wondered many writers, was this outfit called “Green Dot”? In fact, Green Dot is something of an industry giant, an 11-year-old payments company with 4.5 million active customers who used it to complete $16 billion in transactions last year. Green Dot is the biggest example of a new breed of financial-services company that aims extremely sophisticated technology at what might seem like a singularly unpromising demographic: the estimated 60 million American considered “underbanked.” Currently, many of the underbanked are forced to rely on a demimonde of check-cashing and payday advance services. Green Dot’s product is a prepaid debit card.
NPTL - The North Portland Tool Library - Home Page The “Unhyped” New Areas in Internet and Mobile Editor’s note: Legendary investor Vinod Khosla is the founder of Khosla Ventures. You can follow him on Twitter at @vkhosla. All Khosla Ventures investments, as well as ventures related to Vinod Khosla, are italicized. We are in a whole new world of platforms, a post-PC era, which I’d more aptly describe as the always/everywhere era, finally, and that means a whole new set of opportunities. Add to it the fact that because of a variety of factors too numerous to cover here, the cost of experimentation has gone down dramatically (one can start a web startup or write an Android app with no more than a student credit card!) What you get as a result are the recent successes in the Internet/mobile space like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Zynga, Groupon and others, all of which have reenergized both entrepreneurs and investors. A few will be successful, many will fail, some will be acquired for a piece of technology or for the team (acqui-hires). So, what have I left out?
