Guitare :: improvisation - improviser à la guitare Build a Battery-Free Radio With a Glass Bottle Have you ever built a crystal radio? Have you ever built a battery-free crystal radio? I haven't but this project from MAKE Projects makes me really want to try it out! You need no power source, and can repurpose a glass bottle to do the job! This is a "Featured Project" , which means it "has been found to be exceptionally cool by the MAKE staff" -- and we also find it to be exceptionally cool. The video below gives detailed instructions on how to put the radio together, using a board, some screws, a lot of wire and of course the bottle among other materials. It's a great way to learn about some basic DIY gadget-building skills, and these can be translated to other, more techy projects, which it sounds like you'll need in the near future. So, plan on trying out this project on the sooner side of later.

BB Little Garden Is a Gadgety Solution to Growing Herbs Indoors © François-Xavier Martouzet We've seen many designs over the years for growing herbs indoors. While they use up more resources and energy than just putting some pots out on the porch, they're important designs for foodies who like to cook with their own fresh herbs even though they live in apartments where they can't grow their own plants, or want fresh herbs during winter. However, of the many gadgety versions of a planter we've come across, this concept design by François-Xavier Martouzet is probably the most sleek. It features just the basics -- three pots for herbs laid out under a row of LED lights. © François-Xavier Martouzet It takes up hardly any space and is not obtrusive. Is this something you'd use if you lack a sunny window in which to place an herb garden?

Your Life On Rollerblades: Healthier And Better For The Environment More than half of all Americans live within five miles of where they work. But, rather than bike, walk, or take public transportation, the overwhelming majority take cars. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 77% drove to work alone in 2010, with another 10% roughly going via some sort of carpool. About 5% took public transit. Which, of course, isn’t good for health, stress-levels, or the environment--as this helpful infographic from Rollerblade USA (yes, Rollerblade USA) will tell you. You could of course take a bike, though Rollerblade says this will burn you fewer calories than rolling to work (840 calories for an hour long trip versus 704). An aside about cycling. Is rollerblading the answer for these other groups?
