Easy Crochet Ribbed Hat Pattern Allen Williams I wasn’t expecting to crochet any hats today but this one snuck in to my afternoon. We started Veteran’s Day (Remembrance Day here in Canada) by visiting Michael’s Crafts Store as it was having a two-day sale. I found a 20% off coupon in the local flyer so I couldn’t pass it up. Not wanting to take an MSG-induced nap, I decided to put this green and blue variegated yarn to use. I made the hat as suggested in the pattern (size K hook, worsted weight yarn) but I found the hat a bit too tight for a normal adult head. You can really see the crocheted rib style in this photo (and I love the colors in this variegated yarn): It’s only mid-afternoon so I’m thinking there’s time to make one more hat before dinner (assuming I’m not distracted now by blogging). Back to crocheting for me but I hope everyone is enjoying this public day of recognition for the armed forces, regardless of how you are spending the time.

Crochet Owl Hat Pattern in Newborn-Adult Sizes By popular demand, I am happy to present the crochet pattern for larger owl hats! But first, lets go over a couple of frequently asked questions. Q: What is a Magic Ring? A: I like to start all my hats with a magic ring. The magic ring can take some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it really is a great way to start crocheting in rounds. HERE is wonderful explanation on how to make a magic ring by my friend Kara from Petals to Picots. Q: Where do I start my rounds? A: Always start your round in the same stitch as your chain 2. I will let this picture do the explaining. Q: Where do I join my rounds? A: Always join to first DC, NOT your chain 2. Now for the long awaited patterns! Complimentary Pattern: Textured Headband/Ear-warmer | The Cotton Gin Updated Photo 2 Updated Photo I’ve been working on a design for a headband. My version is all one piece and works up quite quick. It only uses three stitches, slip, sc and dc. Worsted Weight Yarn H – Hook Stitches used: chainless foundation slip stitch (fslst), slip stitch (sl st), single crochet (sc) & double crochet (dc). Row 1: Leaving at least a 6″ tail, using the chainless foundation method, work 60 fslst. From this point, you will no longer join, but work in rounds. Round 2: sl st in the second stitch from the hook, Sl st into the next 16 stitches, working in the back loops only. Round 3: Sl st into the next 16 stitches, working in the back loops only. Repeat rounds 2 & 3 three times. Round 10, Sl st into the next 16 stitches, working in the back loops only. Detail of the slip stitches I prefer to do a blind finish using a yarn needle. Just to keep things neat and tidy, go back and use your beginning tail to repeat the invisible finish technique here as well. View from the back side.
Hat Measurements for Crochet and Knit Driving yourself crazy trying to crochet the correct size hat? Here is your answer – a complete list of head and hat measurements as you crochet and knit hats so you can get the perfect size. Basically, you take the head measurement and subtract it by one to one and a half inches to get the measurement for the finished hat, since the hat will stretch. Now, if you have a math brain, Inner Child Crochet says you can take the head measurement, subtract 15%, and then divide by pi (3.14). For the hat circumference, measure from the forehead all the way around. Newborns Head Circumference: 13 to 14 inches (33 to 36 cm) Hat Circumference: 11.5 to 13 inches (29 to 33 cm) Hat height (winter hat): 5.5 to 6 inches (13 to 15 cm) Baby – 3 to 6 months Head Circumference: 14 to 17 inches (36 to 43 cm) Hat Circumference: 12.5 to 14 inches (32 to 36 cm) Hat height (winter hat): 6.5 to 7 inches (15 to 18 cm) Baby – 6 to 12 months Toddler – 12 months to 3 years Child – 3 to 10 years Pre-Teens and Teens Adult Man
