Western Philosophy An A-Z Index of the Windows CMD command line New diode promises to uncork optical computing bottleneck When it comes to speed, photons leave electrons for dead, which means optical computers will be much faster than their current electron-based cousins. While diodes for use in optical information processing systems already exist, these require external assistance to transmit signals so cannot be readily integrated into computer chips. Now researchers at Purdue University have developed a "passive optical diode" that not only doesn't require any outside help to transmit signals, but is also so small that millions would fit on a computer chip, potentially leading to faster, more powerful information processing and supercomputers. While massive amounts of data are transmitted around the globe through fiber optic cables, the optical signals must be converted into electronic signals when they arrive at their destination for use in computers - and vice versa.
67 Open Source Replacements for Really Expensive Applications Why spend thousands or even hundreds or thousands of dollars on a closed source application when you can get a comparable open source app for free? Even if you need commercial support, many open source programs now offer paid support that costs much less than the alternatives. For this list, we looked for quality, open source alternatives to software that has a reputation for being expensive. Whenever possible, we included MSRPs for the expensive software, though in some cases, the pricing scheme is so complicated that it's nearly impossible to pin down. We published a similar list last year, and we've updated and expanded the list for 2011. Accounting 1. 2. 3. 4. Audio Recording/Editing 5. 6. 7. Business Intelligence 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. Atanua - About The Atanua UI Atanua is a real-time logic simulator, designed to help in learning of basic boolean logic and electronics. It uses OpenGL hardware-accelerated rendering and a custom UI designed for a fast workflow and a very low learning curve, letting the students concentrate on learning the subject instead of spending time learning the tool. See the interactive flash demo! The Atanua UI consists of basically three parts: the component listthe work areabuttons for some useful functions, like saving and loading Simple example - SR latch, two implementations As a simple example, the image on the left shows the implementation of a SR-latch using two NOR gates, as well as a SR-latch logic block, and both are connected to a couple of input buttons (bound to keyboard keys 1 and 2) and output LEDs. Editing wires This example can be replicated by simply dragging the needed components from the component list to the work area, and connecting the parts with lines. The 4 signal states Another example
Hack your solar garden lights. Solar garden lights.... How on earth do they manage to sell something with a solar panel, rechargeable battery, step-up converter, LED and the plastic and metal casing for a dollar/pound. You can't even buy the bare components for anywhere near that, in fact the solar panel alone would probably cost you five times the cost of the whole light! This project is about hacking your solar lights to make them different colours and potentially increasing the battery life too.Solar lights are great to hack. They're cheap enough not to worry if you mess up, and very gratifying because they are effectively free to run due to being powered by sunlight. Here's the test subject for this project. Inside is a small NiMh cell and a PCB with the LED, a small inductor, a switch and a COB (Chip On Board) which is basically a bare integrated circuit which is stuck to the board, connected and then covered with a blob of black resin. Now put in your new LED noting the polarity (long lead is positive).

10 Resources for Design-Challenged Programmers When it comes to design, why do programmers tend to have difficulty in creating a simple and user-friendly user interface? Perhaps because programmers are traditionally left-brained and more focused on logic, analytics, objectivity, etc. This type of thinking is encouraged in academics. Designers are right-brained and focus on being intuitive, creative and subjective. This is the best kind of thinking when designing a user interface (UI) or user experience (UX). Just because you tend to be a left-brained thinker, you cannot also have some qualities of a right-brained thinker. 1. 2. 8 Things Programmers Should Know About UI Design 3. 4. 5. 6. 8 Web Design Mistakes That Developers Make 7. 8. 9. 10. Did you identify any design mistakes that you currently make as a programmer? What are the next steps that you will take to move from left-brained to right-brained (or vice versa)? Are there any other websites or books that you think should be included in this list? Tagged with: book, Brian P.
