Dont sit on a cars airbag Methane research is ballooning - science Last updated 05:00 27/01/2010 Scientists are using water balloons to measure sheep burps as part of research into methane emissions. At the crown research institute AgResearch, scientist Kirsty Hammond is studying how different factors affect how much of the gas animals produce. About one-third of New Zealand's greenhouse gas emissions come from methane. Miss Hammond, 24, said scientists were puzzled by why animals produced different amounts of methane. Methane is produced as food is broken down in the animal's gut. A sheep's gut can hold about four or five litres, and Miss Hammond has placed one-litre water balloons in their stomachs. The water balloon does not affect how much the sheep eat, but means that food passes through their stomachs faster. Miss Hammond measures how much methane is emitted by the sheep while they are in a large respiration tank. "It's like a four-star hotel. Grass, white clover and chicory all appeared to lead to different levels of methane being produced by sheep.

The 100 Jokes That Shaped Modern Comedy -- Vulture The oldest joke on record, a Sumerian proverb, was first told all the way back in 1900 B.C. Yes, it was a fart joke: “Something which has never occurred since time immemorial; a young woman did not fart in her husband's lap.” Don’t feel bad if you don’t get it — something was definitely lost in time and translation (you have to imagine it was the Mesopotamian equivalent of “Women be shopping”), but not before the joke helped pave the way for almost 4,000 years of toilet humor. It’s just a shame we’ll never know the name of the Sumerian genius to whom we owe Blazing Saddles. But with the rise of comedy as a commercial art form in the 20th century, and with advances in modern bookkeeping, it’s now much easier to assign credit for innovations in joke-telling, which is exactly what Vulture set out to do with this list of the 100 Jokes That Shaped Modern Comedy. A few notes on our methodology: We’ve defined “joke” pretty broadly here. 1913Cohen on the TelephoneGeorge L. 1941W.C. Airplane!

There’s More To Detroit Than Ruin and Decay, You Just Have to Look “Detroit – Unbroken Down” is photographer David Jordano’s response to all the negative press his hometown endures. By offering up portraits of human survival and perseverance instead of ruin and decay, Jordano reveals the dignity and humanity of Detroit’s urban landscape. Jordano adds: “My hope is that this work will convey in many ways that Detroit is a city made up of many small communities, all building a way of life through perseverance, hope, and sheer determination. This project bares witness to the fact that Detroit is not a story about what’s been destroyed, but more importantly about what’s been left behind and those who are left to cope with it. Jordano is one of four photographers that have been shortlisted for the prestigious AIMIA | AGO Photography Prize, Canada’s most significant prize for photographers. The Prize will award C$50,000 to one winner, who is chosen by public vote. We caught up with David to learn more about “Detroit – Unbroken Down”. Crowd Gathering, St.

Why you shouldn’t be surprised that prisoners crushed Harvard’s debate team The Bard Prison Initiative made headlines recently when its debate team beat Harvard University's in an intercollegiate competition. But the privately funded program, in which incarcerated men and women earn degrees from Bard College, has been around for 15 years. In this 2012 clip, professors and students explain how the program works. (Bard Prison Initiative/Frank duPont/wdfilms) Last month, a debate team of three inmates with violent criminal records defeated a team of three Harvard University undergraduates. It sounds like an underdog story plucked from the pages of a yet unwritten Walt Disney screenplay — and in some ways, it is. But it’s also worth pointing out the fallacy of our underlying assumptions about such a matchup — the first (and most pernicious) being that criminals aren’t smart. Despite living behind bars, prisoners have recorded albums, produced fine literature, run lucrative criminal enterprises and mastered the ancient meditation technique known as Vipassana.
