Very Short Stories for Middle and High School Students to Read Online Howard is an avid short story reader who likes to help others find and understand stories. If your students are struggling to get into the short story, or you're pressed for time, here are some very brief stories to get you started. They're not as short as Hemingway's famous six-word story (For sale: baby shoes, never worn.), but they're manageable even for reluctant readers. Most are under 2,000 words; I've included an approximate word count where I could. If you want to be able to reference a print edition at your leisure, one of my favorites is "Little Worlds" (Amazon). This anthology has 31 short stories for students. The Golden Gate Bridge Over 1200 meters long, the Golden Gate Bridge crosses the waters of the Golden Gate Strait, between San Francisco and Marin County. It is much more than just a way to get across the water, however. The architecture, size, and history of the bridge make it one of the most famous landmarks in the world. 10 million people visit the bridge every year and a famous travel guide book claims that it is the most photographed bridge in the world. An engineering student first proposed the bridge in 1916. Another engineer named Joseph Strauss came up with a potential design for the bridge, which he believed would cost $17 million.

Someone on Reddit asked the question, "What is the best horror story you can come up with in two sentences?" I honestly didn't think it was possible to give me chills from such a limited amount of words... CommonLit Added a Guided Reading Mode for Students CommonLit is a free service that offers a large collection of fiction and nonfiction texts paired to reading questions. You can create a classroom on CommonLit in which you can monitor your students' progress through the texts that you assign to them. Recently, CommonLit added a new feature that they call Guided Reading Mode. When you enable Guided Reading Mode your students will see questions appear in the margin of the documents. Students have to answer those questions correctly in order for the next section of the document to appear.

Best Short Stories for Middle Schoolers, As Chosen by Teachers It can be a challenge to get middle schoolers interested in reading. The thought of tackling a thick novel can be overwhelming, especially during distance learning. Short stories are always a great choice. In addition to requiring less of a time commitment, they are an easy way to expose your students to new authors and genres. Also, the best short stories are every bit as engaging and meaningful as the best novels. We asked our audience on Facebook and Instagram to share some of their favorite short stories for middle schoolers.
