3-D Printed “Magic Arms” Let A Toddler Hug And Play
In the last few years, we’ve seen everything from handcuff keys to prescription medication emerge from the beds of 3-D printers. But Emma Lavelle’s story is one of the most compelling examples of the technology in recent memory. Emma was born with a rare congenital disorder called arthrogryposis, which prevents her from being able to move her arms. Older children and adults suffering from arthrogryposis and similar conditions can use robotic prosthetics to gain control over their movements. Still, at an arthrogryposis conference in Philadelphia, her mother saw the inventors of one of the most successful systems--Wilmington Robotic Exoskeleton, or WREX--present their work, and was so impressed that she contacted them anyways. “We thought, well, we could print it out for her," remembers Rahman, referring to his lab’s 3-D printer, which offered the only viable way to fabricate such tiny parts. For Emma, the benefits of WREX were immediate.

Cannondale's Chainless CERV Concept Bike Transforms as You Ride It!
Priority Designs and Cannondale have joined forces to create a cutting-edge concept bike that transforms to change shape as you ride it! Known as the Continuously Ergonomic Race Vehicle (CERV), the forkless, chainless, and dynamically adjustable bicycle made its world debut at EUROBIKE last month where it was hailed for its innovative transformer-like design. The CERV features a unique “dynamically adjustable headset that moves both fore-and-aft and up-and-down” while a cyclist rides it. They system is designed so that the rider is always in an optimal position based on the terrain that they are riding on. On the Priority Design website, the team state that “the headset translates forward and down for a clean, low-drag position when descending. When climbing, it moves up and back, creating a more upright position for maximum leverage on the crank. After the Cannondale team came up with the unique mechanical design, CERV mock-ups were built and all of the key components were tested.
Watch: The Handmade Process Behind Your Eames Chair
Last year, I visited the Herman Miller factories and manufacturing partners in and around Zeeland, Michigan, and my first stop was at the astonishingly efficient factory that turns out the famed Aeron chair. Using a continual improvement management process learned directly from Toyota manufacturing gurus, Aeron production efficiency has improved by 500% since it was first introduced. All of which is a marked contrast to the Eames classics that made Herman Miller famous. As much as technology has advanced, and as much as the status of the American worker has morphed, the process of making an Eames lounge or a LCW chair remains painstaking and thoroughly human. For the most part, these processes are virtually identical to those developed by Charles and Ray Eames over 65 years ago. But all of the efficiency is still guided by humans simply because the materials are natural and don’t lend themselves to automation. [All images and video: Drew Anthony Smith/Fast Company]
