CHICKEN FEED: Main Menu Grass-Fed Chickens? Chickens will consume 30% of their calories from grass, if allowed to truly "free range." Since grass is very low in calories, that's a WHOLE LOT of grass! Another thing chickens need is animal protein. Chickens are omnivores, just like the humans they've kept company with for all these millennia. The new "all vegetarian" chicken is a convenience to the mass-producer, who thus doesn't have to worry about the potential of latent animal diseases in animal sources of poultry feed; and animal protein is very much more expensive for the farmer. But, strictly vegetarian-fed chickens are potentially undernourished. This website's sponsor Lions Grip Traction Pads ™ Get your Car or Truck...UN-stuck! There are two main kinds of fatty acids, Omega-3 and Omega-6. When we are oversupplied with Omega-6, our "bad cholesterol" rises, and our "good cholesterol" stays low. Chicken Blog Last June, we got the Starplate frame and walls up, then started thinking about the roof. Although no one else had done it that way, we liked the idea of using aluminum flashing, both for ease of cutting and for safety of rainwater collection. Our first stab at it, though, involved too much corner cutting. Furring strips seemed like they might be sufficient to anchor the flashing, but the roof just felt too flimsy using this method. Round two was much more successful. We planned our starplate roof to have an overhang, so back when we started, we used ten-foot-long 2X4s for the rafters instead of the eight-foot-long 2X4s we used for most of the frame. This part of the project went extremely smoothly, although Mark didn't have fun being up on the roof. The photo above shows how we slipped the last piece of flashing up under the edge of the other piece and anchored it down. But before starting on the eaves, we had to figure out the peak.

Remote Control Chicken Door The motivation for this project is to not have to get up early in the morning to let the chickens out of the barn. The motorized chicken door is controlled by a long-range radio remote control that we keep in our bedroom, some 200 feet (60m) from the door. We chose this approach rather than operating the door via a timer or daylight because we want manual control of when the door closes. There are sometimes stragglers out in the barnyard a little after dark. The door is built from scrap wood and inexpensive, mostly surplus, components. A close-up of the door and its mechanism, shown in the open position. The locking lever pivots on a bolt but stops in the upwards direction at the position shown because the right end of the lever contacts the door. If someone, a raccoon for example, tries to lift the door directly without lifting the locking lever, then the locking lever pivots down and to the left and contacts the left side stud, thereby blocking the door from further upwards motion.
