TikTok: 'We don't give user data to China' Image copyright Getty Images Video-sharing app TikTok has denied accusations that it is controlled by the Chinese government. Theo Bertram, TikTok's head of public policy for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said it would refuse any request from China to hand over data. "The suggestion that we are in any way under the thumb of the Chinese government is completely and utterly false," he told the BBC. TikTok has come under pressure by Washington over its future in the US. Rich renters are fleeing America’s cities HOMEOWNERS’ FEARS that the recession caused by covid-19 would bring down house prices have not been borne out. Low interest rates have kept the rich world’s housing markets bubbling. In America’s biggest cities, prices were 5.2% higher in August than a year before, according to Standard & Poor’s Case-Shiller index. For Americans who rent rather than own, however, the pandemic has been less benign.

A dark money mystery in Florida centers on the campaign of a spoiler candidate who appeared to help a Republican win by 32 votes Two days later, the money flowed from the PACs to an Orlando-area print and advertising firm. Shortly thereafter, came a torrent of nearly identical political fliers seemingly intended to siphon away support from Democratic candidates by tricking voters into casting their ballots for purported spoiler candidates who demonstrated no real interest in getting elected. None, for example, engaged in typical campaigning activities or raised significant funds. In one case, the mailers appear to have helped a Republican—a co-founder of Latinas For Trump—unseat the Democratic incumbent in a state Senate race by a razor-thin margin of just 32 votes. The situation, which has been generating headlines in Florida for weeks, has all the makings of a "dark money" mystery in the Sunshine State.

How to stay thankful when Covid fills the holidays with guilt, anger, and grief Americans are being told that the key to handling this pandemic is “personal responsibility:” Stay home (if you can), work from home (if you can), avoid seeing friends (if you can), don’t dine indoors (if you can.) In this way, everyone is to blame for this pandemic — our individual choices cascade out too far to focus on any one cause as being “the problem.” In effect, this means that nobody is to blame, a collective shunting of responsibility. This deep into the pandemic cycle, I’m at a loss for where to channel the anger I’m feeling right now. The Transportation Security Administration checked more than 1 million people flying through U.S. airports on Nov 20. One million is also the number of new Covid-19 cases that have accumulated within six days in the United States, the same number of new cases that piled on top of the rest in just the six days before that, for a total of 12 million since March.

How to Spot Fake News Ahead of the 2020 Elections False news sites are sneaky, but there are a few easy signs that’ll help you catch them. First, check the web address to the news story. Some false news sites try to imitate reputable sources (such as ABC News or The Wall Street Journal) by making minor changes to their URLs, like adding or removing a letter, number or symbol. Compare the links of the official news outlet and the site of the story you’re reading to help confirm if the site is real or phony.
