Coronavirus: Ten key lessons the government must learn set out in new report The UK has 10 key lessons to learn from its handling of the coronavirus pandemic so far, a cross-party group of MPs have warned. While the government has been praised for seeking a diverse range of scientific opinion on how to respond to COVID-19, the Science and Technology Committee has raised concerns about some of the decisions made early on in the outbreak - as well as its preparedness for the future. In a 19-page document, committee chairman Greg Clark acknowledged that some judgements were made "within a fog of uncertainty", but said past experiences must be used to inform the country's coronavirus strategy going forward.

Adonis Hoffman: Chicago needs Obama more than Hollywood Former President Barack Obama has gone Hollywood, trading in Southside Chicago for Sunset Boulevard, Silicon Valley and celebrity soirees on Martha’s Vineyard just when the Windy City needs him most. As Chicago slips into a cycle of shooting and looting, Obama has the unique posture and position to help resolve the deadly spree of crime and violence. America — indeed Chicago — spawned the success that became Obama. Now with ill winds blowing, Chicago needs him more than ever. If anyone should abhor the blood in his old ’hood, it should be Barack. The senseless killing is as surreal as Spike Lee’s “Chi-Raq” and as bone-chilling as the damp winds that blow off Lake Michigan every winter.
UK unemployment surges to 1.35 million – rise to over 10% expected The Office of National Statistics (ONS) said jobless claims under Universal Credit surged by 856,000 to 2.1 million in April, compared with the previous month. Official statisticians also said that early estimates for April 2020 indicate that the number of paid employees fell by 1.6 percent compared to March, as firms began to feel a greater impact from the lockdown. Job vacancies also significantly decreased, with the number of empty posts in the three months to April diving by 170,000 to 637,000, compared to the previous quarter. Official ONS figures show unemployment increased by 50,000 to 1.35 million in the three months to March as the impact of the pandemic first started to be felt in the UK. Jonathan Athow, deputy national statistician for economic statistics at the ONS, said: "While only covering the first weeks of restrictions, our figures show Covid-19 is having a major impact on the labour market.
Bank transfer fraud victims face total lottery on refunds, warns Which? Victims of bank transfer scams face a "total lottery" over whether they will get their money back under a voluntary industry code, according to a consumer campaign group. Which? said people who fell foul of authorised push payment (APP) fraud are being treated unfairly or inconsistently by banks and building societies when trying to get refunds, leaving some thousands of pounds out of pocket. The criticism comes amid concerns that criminals have used the coronavirus pandemic as an opportunity to scam people into handing over money. APP fraud happens when someone is tricked into transferring money directly to a fraudster. A voluntary reimbursement code was introduced last year to make it easier for fraud victims to get their money back in situations where neither they, nor their bank is to blame.
Presidential debate commission adopts rules to mute microphones Donald Trump has complained that a rule change to mute microphones for part of his final televised debate with Joe Biden is “very unfair” and objected to the topics chosen by the moderator. When the two face off on Thursday for a final televised debate, each candidate will have their microphones cut off while the other is delivering responses to questions on American families, race in America, climate change, national security and leadership. The 90-minute debate is divided into 15-minute segments on the six topics, with each candidate granted two minutes to deliver uninterrupted remarks before proceeding to an open debate for nine minutes of each segment.
