The Beast File: Google ('HUNGRY BEAST', ABC TV)

Stars make search more personal We've long believed that personalization makes search more relevant and fun. For nearly five years, we've been tailoring results with personalized search. Today we're announcing a new feature in search that makes it easier for you to mark and rediscover your favorite web content — stars. With stars, you can simply click the star marker on any search result or map and the next time you perform a search, that item will appear in a special list right at the top of your results when relevant. The great thing about stars is that you don't have to keep track of them. Stars in search replace SearchWiki. Stars in search are rolling out in the next couple days and will be available globally for all signed-in users.

Biking directions added to Google Maps Whenever I meet someone who finds out that I work on the directions team for Google Maps, the first question I'm asked is often "So when's Google Maps going to add biking directions?" We're big biking fans too, so we've been itching to give you a concrete answer. I don't want to keep the good news a secret any longer, so the answer is: right now! Today we've added biking directions and extensive bike trail data to Google Maps for the U.S. My team has been keeping close tabs on all the public support for biking directions that’s been steadily coming in, but we knew that when we added the feature, we wanted to do it right: we wanted to include as much bike trail data as possible, provide efficient routes, allow riders to customize their trip, make use of bike lanes, calculate rider-friendly routes that avoid big hills and customize the look of the map for cycling to encourage folks to hop on their bikes. So that's exactly what we've done. So, how does it work?

Google’s Schmidt: China Negotiations Should End ‘Soon’ | Epicenter Google CEO Eric Schmidt said Wednesday that the search and advertising giant was actively negotiating with China over censorship that would end soon. His remarks came two months after the company revealed in-country attempts to hack into the GMail accounts of human rights activists and declared that it would stop censoring results on google.cn — something it has yet to do. “We are in active negotiations with the Chinese government,” Eric Schmidt told reporters at a media summit in Abu Dhabi, as quoted by the Wall Street Journal. “I’m going to use the word ‘soon’, which I will not define otherwise,” Schmidt said, according to Reuters. Schmidt’s remarks were the first confirmation by Google that it was even talking to China, though Bejing said as much last week. The GMail attack, which targeted 20 tech companies including Adobe, Yahoo and Intel, also sought source code, and resulted in Google losing some intellectual property. Google has been reticent say much of anything in public.

Seth's Blog: You rock This is deceptive. You don't rock all the time. No one does. No one is a rock star, superstar, world-changing artist all the time. In fact, it's a self-defeating goal. No, but you might rock five minutes a day. Five minutes to write a blog post that changes everything, or five minutes to deliver an act of generosity that changes someone. Five minutes a day you might do exceptional work, remarkable work, work that matters. And five minutes of rocking would be enough, because it would be five minutes more than just about anyone else.

Packrati.us = Twitter + Delicious Apple sells 50,000 iPads in two hours - Apple 2.0 - Fortune Brainstorm Tech By one estimate, pre-orders were coming in Friday morning at the rate of 25,000 per hour The folks who hang out at Investor Village's AAPL Sanity Board are too impatient to wait for Apple (AAPL) to announce sales figures; they much prefer to work them out on their own -- in real time. Entering the order numbers associated with their own purchases on a Google spreadsheet, they think they've cracked the code. As of 11:05 a.m. ET -- two and a half hours after Apple's online store began taking pre-orders -- the group had received 15 confirmations with order numbers as high as 74,000 (the numbers don't necessarily start at zero and include non-iPad purchases). "51,000 orders in two hours," announced Victor Castroll shortly after noon. His estimate -- which is adjusted for the roughly 15,000 online orders that come in a typical day -- jibes with a 20,000-per-hour figure published earlier by Silicon Alley Insider. Which iPads are people buying?
