How to Write a Drabble - Writing tips from Michael Brookes
In case you don't know, a drabble is a short form of fiction that is exactly 100 words long (not including the title). Along with being a lot of fun, their short form can also encourage people who've never written anything before to just give it a try, but writing a coherent and engaging story in just 100 words is very challenging. To help you become a master drabble writer, Michael Brookes, one of our contributors, has kindly agreed to share his thoughts on what makes a great drabble.

Using Evidence Effectively
Most of the assignments you will do in university will ask you to make an argument, to take a stance, or to prove a hypothesis. The best way to do this is to research the topic, develop a thesis statement, hypothesis, or claim and then use evidence to support this claim. Think of evidence as the supports that buttress your claim, making it more solid than it would be alone. In fact, if you make a claim or an argument without evidence, your paper could appear to be unsupported opinion or not particularly well-researched.
Storytelling and drama
Storytelling and drama share a number of features which make them natural to integrate during lessons. Both build on children’s innate capacity for fantasy and imaginative play, and even very young children can differentiate between the conventions of a story or drama and real life. Through stories and drama, children develop understanding of themselves and the world around them. The distance afforded by characters and events which are not real also helps children to explore significant issues which are relevant to their daily lives, in a way that is safe and enjoyable. In storytelling and drama, the usual norms of time, place and identity are temporarily suspended as, for example, in a story which spans a hundred years yet takes three minutes to tell, or a drama activity which transforms the classroom into a ‘jungle’ and all the children in it to ‘hungry lions’. Best of Data Journalism for Video Storytelling
The best-known examples of data journalism tend to be based around text and visual, but it’s harder to find data journalism in video and audio. Ahead of the launch of my new MA in Data Journalism at the Birmingham School of Media, I thought I would share my list of examples of video data journalism that I use with students in exploring data storytelling across multiple platforms. If you have others, I’d love to hear about them. FOI Stories in Broadcast
