Michelle Luhtala, a savvy librarian from New Canaan High School in Connecticut has crowd-sourced the best, most extensive list of apps voted on by educators around the country. “I wanted to make sure we had some flexibility because there’s no one app that’s better than all the others,” Luhtala said. Some apps are best for younger students, others are more complicated, better suited for high school students. Many apps do one thing really well, but aren’t great at everything.

The Nature School (TNS) Primary in Port Macquarie on the New South Wales north coast, is one of only a handful of schools in Australia based on an outdoor learning model, popular in Europe but in its infancy here.

80 Open Education Resource (OER) Tools for Publishing and Development Initiatives
Many Open Education Resources (OER) have been introduced by governments, universities, and individuals within the past few years. OERs provide teaching and learning materials that are freely available and offered online for anyone to use. Whether you’re an instructor, student, or self-learner, you have access to full courses, modules, syllabi, lectures, assignments, quizzes, activities, games, simulations, and tools to create these components. While some OERs include OpenCourseWare (OCW) or other educational materials, they may also offer the means to alter those courses through editing, adding to those courses through publication, and the ability to shape the tools that share those resources. Additionally, they may maintain forums or other platforms where individuals can collaborate on building educational tools and documentation and the reach for those materials. This list is not all-inclusive, as resources that offer limited collaboration were excluded.
ABC show Don't Stop The Music examines what learning an instrument can do for a child's brain development

While they were generally happy, the students had problems with their attention, memory, and impulse control. For some, those were exacerbated by issues of substance abuse or chronic illness at home. But Dr Collins, an expert in how learning music can change the developing brain, had gone to Challis on a mission. As part of a new ABC docuseries Don't Stop The Music, alongside singer Guy Sebastian, she wanted to help design a music program that would have positive impacts beyond the students' abilities to sing or play an instrument.
Education app of the week: Tickle for iPad
The robots have taken over! Well, they’ve heavily influenced this week’s education app review, in any case, as we take a look at Tickle, the simple robot programming app for iPad… What is Tickle for iPad? Tickle (Tickle Labs, Inc, free) is a free app that lets you program a wide variety of robots through a simple programming language and drag and drop visual interface, then control them from an iPad. Just some of the ‘bots and systems controllable by Tickle include the Sphero robotic ball, a wide variety of flyable drones, the Arduino open-source electronic prototyping platform and Philips Hue smart home lighting. You can also program interactive stories and simple games using a library of animated characters and sounds.
