In una serie di inutili tentativi di aggirarsi reciprocamente, i due schieramenti erano quindi arrivati alle rive della Manica: a quel punto l'esercito tedesco da un lato e quelli francese e inglese dall'altro si erano trovati schierati uno contro l'altro per oltre 400 km, bloccati nelle trincee che chissà chi (nessuno lo ha mai stabilito con certezza) aveva cominciato a scavare.
