Google Seems to Be Running Low on Products to Kill - Liz Gannes Google CEO Larry Page has made an active practice of cutting deprioritized, ignored and non-key products. In the past year that’s included Gears, Knol, Wave, Buzz, Code Search, Aardvark, Google Labs and Slide. Today, Google published another “spring cleaning” list of products it is purging, but at this point it seems to be running low on clear and easy things to cut. For instance, patent search is now being included in regular search, with the same options plus some speed improvements. While any particular product’s death will probably piss off someone somewhere, this list doesn’t seem terribly controversial. It includes: The non-starter One Pass program for publishers that launched only a year agoA toolbar to help browse content called Google Related that was introduced only last AugustThe Google Flu Vaccine Finder, a former “20 percent” project from 2009 that’s being passed onto HealthMapOlder software to support BlackBerry and Picasa, and the mobile web version of Google Talk

Deadpool (Wade Wilson) Wade Wilson's early life is mostly unknown. His mother died of cancer while he was young and his father (who was in the military) was physically abusive. Wade was a deliquent in his teenage years, possibly to spite his father. Little is known of Wilson’s subsequent mercenary activities. In America, Wilson met and fell in love with teenage prostitute Vanessa Carlysle, with whom he shared dreams of a better life. Following his escape, Deadpool served for a time as an enforcer alongside the surgically altered criminal Hammerhead. Deadpool subsequently helped X-Force member Siryn against the unstoppable Juggernaut and her uncle, Black Tom Cassidy, who had forced Killebrew into their service. Soon afterward, Deadpool was approached by Zoe Culloden of the rechristened Landau, Luckman, and Lake who believed he was destined to be the Mithras, one who would help usher in a golden age for Earth. Having lost his optimism about bettering himself, Deadpool returned to his mercenary life.

The co-founder of Buffer, a 10-person startup that allows users to schedule social media updates, Gascoigne is the proponent of a radical new way of doing business where there is no cloak and dagger, where every employee knows everything that is happening in the business. It’s part of Buffer’s policy to “default to transparency” in all possible cases, a way of working that the company believes will become the norm rather than the exception. (And Buffer isn’t the only company that thinks radical transparency is the future of business.) In American business culture, asking your coworker their salary is among the most taboo of conversation topics. An unspoken rule of information sharing within organizations is often: if it doesn’t pertain to your job, you don’t need to know about it. Meanwhile, other parts of our society are becoming more transparent and our privacy less essential. On Giving Raises: How about you?

Waiting For Prometheus What is the real issue brought up by this whole PRISM debacle? It’s not that the government is willing to overstep its role using national security as an excuse. That’s been going on for thousands of years. It’s not that companies in a position of power are willing to throw those that rely on them under the bus in order to get ahead. The issue central to all of these is that the fundamental balance of power when it comes to control of information has been allowed to shift unthinkably far away from the individual and towards a set of institutions with motives that are at best mercenary. To address the PRISM scandal itself briefly, I think we will be less surprised at the existence of such a program than, as I think will inevitably transpire, the incompetence and inefficiency that almost certainly define its methods and usage. But whether they are siphoning our private data well or poorly is beside the point. And I don’t mean “why does the law permit it?”. Think about this.
