Drawing on the iPad: 12 touchscreen styluses reviewed
See how these 12 compare to other styluses: Check out our in-depth iOS stylus charts. Steve Jobs may hate the idea of using a stylus on his touchscreen devices, but the fact remains that some consumers simply prefer an intermediary accessory for interaction. Whether it’s too cold outside for direct contact, you’re worried about touchscreen germs, or you need a sketching tool, sometimes a stylus can be a good thing. Accessory manufacturers seem to agree, having produced a plethora of styluses for Apple’s iOS devices. As some people know, in my not-so-secret other life, I enjoy drawing cartoons. Note that, as of yet, Apple does not provide access to software APIs that might allow for pressure sensitivity on the iPad. 7 Tools for Collaboratively Creating Image Galleries This morning I received an email from a reader who had taken a group on a tour of historic places in Boston and was looking for some suggestions for ways to create a collaborative image gallery. Writing a response to that email got me thinking about some ways to collaboratively create image galleries. The following tools could be used by you and your students to create galleries of images captured while on a field trip. These tools could also be used to collaboratively create galleries of Creative Commons and Public Domain images. ZangZing is a free service for creating collaborative online photo albums. Drop Event is a free service for creating public and private group photo albums. If there is such a thing as "old and reliable" in Web 2.0 tools, Flickr qualifies. Drop Mocks just might be the simplest tool for constructing an image gallery and slideshow that I've come across. Create a collaborative Google Map and have students geo-locate images on the map.

Now E-Textbooks Can Report Back on Students' Reading Habits - Wired Campus Denver — Data mining is creeping into every aspect of student life—classrooms, advising, socializing. Now it’s hitting textbooks, too. CourseSmart, which sells digital versions of textbooks by big publishers, announced on Wednesday a new tool to help professors and others measure students’ engagement with electronic course materials. When students use print textbooks, professors can’t track their reading. But as learning shifts online, everything students do in digital spaces can be monitored, including the intimate details of their reading habits. Those details are what will make the new CourseSmart service tick. The idea is that faculty members can reach out to students showing low engagement, says Sean Devine, chief executive of CourseSmart. Three institutions—Villanova University, Rasmussen College, and Texas A&M University at San Antonio—plan to run pilots of the product, called CourseSmart Analytics. But reading surveillance raises privacy issues. Mr. Return to Top

How To Flip Your Classroom Using Lecture Tools In the contemporary world, lecture capture technology is one of the latest inventions being used by many education systems. It has drastically improved teaching and has taken learning into a new dimension. Literally moving lectures out of the classroom has appealed to a broader range of people across the globe. Lecture tools have also enabled lecturers to interact more with the students. Classroom flipping has taken learning to a whole new level and the gains made so far bear witness to the whole process. Change Gradually Creating materials for flipping your classroom can be a daunting task since it demands a lot of time especially if you are doing it for the first time. Discuss with Your Students before Implementing If students have just been used to lectures, they might resist change especially if it is imposed on them. 16 Companies Working On E-Textbooks Of The Future This article was originally posted on Education Dive by Roger Riddell and is republished here with permission. The e-textbook movement stands to reshape instruction as new education technologies continue to fill classrooms via tablets and other mobile devices. Meanwhile, the e-textbook market continues to evolve, and though many of the publishers’ names have remained the same, new players have emerged, and old companies are adopting new strategies. Here are 16 names in e-textbooks that you should know about, as well as what each of them are doing to set themselves apart in a competitive new area of education: 1. KNO (Publisher) College e-textbook provider Kno expanded their market to the K-12 audience through a deal with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, who previously offered K-12 social studies e-texts through the iPad. 2. CourseSmart—whose catalog includes over 30,000 e-textbooks from 40 publishers—announced a new e-textbook pilot program last year withInternet2 and Educause. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

'Our School Would Be Better Off Without iPads.' We go on and on about iPads, tablets, phablets, and just about every other piece of technology out there. But the discussion is slowly changing. It’s becoming less and less about how to deploy as much technology as possible. So that’s why it was interesting to see a comment pop up on a recent post here on Edudemic about iPads . The comment is below. NOTE: Since a teacher’s name and school was included in the comment, I thought it might be useful to remove any personal or identifying information from the comment before raising awareness of it. I get that iPads can help students learn and it can open up new opportunities to learn.

Ways to Evaluate Educational Apps I am conducting a series of workshops in Florida and was asked to share a rubric to help teachers evaluate educational apps as part of the workshop. In 2010 Harry Walker developed a rubric, and I used his rubric (with some modifications by Kathy Schrock) as the basis for mine. (Read Harry Walker's paper Evaluating the Effectiveness of Apps for Mobile Devices.) I kept in mind that some apps are used to practice a discrete skill or present information just one time. My rubric also emphasizes the ability to customize content or settings and how the app encourages the use of higher order thinking skills. Here's what I chose to spotlight in my rubric: Relevance The app’s focus has a strong connection to the purpose for the app and appropriate for the student Customization App offers complete flexibility to alter content and settings to meet student needs Feedback Student is provided specific feedback Thinking Skills Engagement Student is highly motivated to use the app Sharing

4 Great Rubrics to Help you Select Educational Apps As iPads are increasingly infiltrating our educational systems the question of the pedagogical implications ensuing from the use of these mobile gadgets in the classroom come to the surface. Some do look at them as an added distraction and that learning can be more focused without students having access to them during the class. Traditionalists do advocate this view and are , in fact, against the " over-digitization " of education. To these people I say what John Dewy once said " If we teach today as we thought yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow ". I am strongly in favor of the use of mobile gadgetry for educational purposes. I am talking here specifically about iPad. 1- BVLS iPad App Evaluation Form Click Here to download it. 2- iPad App Evaluation Guiding Question Click Here to download it. 3- Mobile Application Selection Rubric Click Here to download it. 4- Critical Evaluation of Content-based iPad/iPod App Click Here to download it.

Assessment & Rubrics A common question that we get with regard to technology projects is "how do I grade it?" The 21st-century communication and collaboration skills which are used with most technology based projects are, in many ways, real-world problem-solving skills. The standard, multiple-choice type tests simply are not going to be able to assess students' learning. Instead of thinking of the assessment itself as the measurement, we are going to need to examine our students' performances of understanding. Performance is most often viewed in the form of formative and summative assessment. Rubrics to Measure Student Learning Providing detailed explanations of an assignment using an online rubric, such as Rubistar or Digial Media Scoring Guides, can assist students in both completing tasks and improving future performance. Fundamentally, assessing multimedia projects is no different from assessing a traditional project, writing assignment or presentation. General Multimedia Assessment Tools Assessing Wikis

Thanks for your comment. Just ordered the long Nomad Brush. The Nomad "Compose" looked interesting but there were some negative comments about the angle of the very short tip. Anyway, Amazon removed it from their site before I returned to order. It was not to be available until the 17th. Perhaps the reason for removal. Have learned to order from Amazon when you find something. Usually when you return the price has increased. I did say "usually". :-) Thanks again. by iquitoz Dec 15

Yes, it was the Nomad. It is a fun gadget that looks the part, so maybe there is some psychological benefit, however, it really just comes down to which program you are using and which brushes you use, if it detects angles or not, etc...don't you think? I like the feel of it in my hand. by lkatmat Dec 2

Hello, lkatmat. Was the "brush" like stylus a Nomad? If it was, I would like to know which model you ordered and how you like it. Thank you. by iquitoz Nov 21

Have used the Pogo Sketch for about one year. The tip material eventually became compressed and began falling off. It became nearly unusable but that be expected with use. Now trying the Kuel H10 with a hollow "rubber" tip. A little short even when barrel is extended. Response is nice. by iquitoz Nov 21

Good review, great examples, we understand in a short time. by sandrarlockwood Nov 20

I have the Wacom Bamboo and I agree it is the best. I haven't tried the Adonit Jot Pro. I googled it and it does seem interesting. I just ordered the one that is like a watercolor brush (I forget the name) but haven't received it yet. I am interested in the feel of this one. by lkatmat Nov 18

Good review, great examples and descriptions of how they performed under use. Would have liked to see the Adonit Jot Pro included. I like the heft and feel, but the Wacom Bamboo might still be best. by kenkiyomi Nov 3
