Trans-Domain Proposals Do you work in a research area which is interdisciplinary, yet does not find an outlet for development? Is your research agenda constrained by grant and funding opportunities that are too narrowly defined for your scientific networking purposes? Is an international network a potential solution? Trans-Domain (TD) COST Actions offer researchers fertile ground for future networks across many science and technology disciplines, by allowing unusually broad, interdisciplinary proposals to cover several scientific fields. Submission of Trans-Domain Proposal (TDP) Trans-domain Proposals cover two or more scientific fields. A Pilot evaluation and selection procedure for the submission to the Open Call of Trans-Domain Proposals (TDP Pilot) was introduced in early 2013 (Open Call 2013-1). There are two key deadlines in the submission of a TDP Pilot Proposal, both requiring, as a pre-requisite, an up-to-date e-COST user profile: Proposal Registration Proposal Submission Deadlines TDP Panel News
Transport and Urban Development (TUD) TUD fosters research coordination in the fields of transport and the built environment, which play a strategic role in the modern society and economy. The Domain is by definition cross-sectoral and multidisciplinary, encompassing a wide range of scientific expertises within the transport and land use planning, design, and management activities with a special emphasis on the strong interrelationships among the relevant policy fields as well on all aspects related to sustainable development. The domain activities should be innovative and complementary to other European programmes in the relevant fields. The aim is to cover both basic and applied research activities including technical and technological developments and their changeovers that are relevant to policy and decision making processes. A significant concern is devoted to activities exploring new research needs and developments. News
INTERREG IVB NWE programme - Investing in Opportunities 1. Capitalising on innovation. The NWE region is the economic powerhouse of Europe: it is endowed with a wealth of territorial assets including a highly skilled workforce and world class universities. To extract the economic the value of such attributes, projects under this priority should aim to strengthen the economic competitiveness of NWE in response to the Lisbon agenda for growth and jobs. Projects should aim to produce transnational partnerships which can enhance the region’s capacity to innovate and facilitate the development of knowledge-based activities. Preference will be given to projects which can develop cross-sectoral synergies and facilitate the creation, demonstration and above all, the application of knowledge. Project activities should be clearly linked to territorial development and not solely focus on networking within the specific scientific/business sector, for which, the interregional cooperation strand is more appropriate. Fast and efficient transport underpins Europe's economy. Marco Polo helps to reduce the costs of transport to the environment, the economy and society. Marco Polo aims to free Europe's roads of an annual volume of 20 billion tonne-kilometres of freight, the equivalent of more than 700 000 trucks a year travelling between Paris and Berlin. Marco Polo incentives can make the difference.

Transport: Motorways of the Sea - European commission The “motorways of the sea” concept aims at introducing new intermodal maritime-based logistics chains in Europe, which should bring about a structural change in our transport organisation within the next years to come. These chains will be more sustainable, and should be commercially more efficient, than road-only transport. Motorways of the sea will thus improve access to markets throughout Europe, and bring relief to our over-stretched European road system. In its Transport White Paper of September 2001, the Commission proposed the development of “Motorways of the Sea” as a “real competitive alternative to land transport.” The adoption of Article 12a of the TEN-T Guidelines of 29 April 2004 (“TEN-T” - Official Journal L 167, 30/04/2004 P.0001 - 0038, COM(2004)0884 ) by Council and European Parliement gives a legal framework for funding the “motorways of the sea” . Transport: Short sea shipping - European commission The European Commission has an active policy to promote Short Sea Shipping. This form of transport mode is highly efficient in terms of environmental performance and energy efficiency. It has the potential to solve road congestion problems affecting many parts of the European continent. All the studies point out the necessity of encouraging short sea shipping to meet the goal of the European sustainable transport policy. The Commission has a strong promotion policy, supporting coordination centres for short sea shipping in all coastal EU Member States. The Commission's programme contains a set of 14 actions subdivided into measures, and mentions the actors responsible and the timetable (2003-2010) for each measure The programme describes legislative, technical and operational initiatives which are aimed at developing Short Sea Shipping at EU, national, regional and industry levels.
NAIADES Transport: Revision of NAIADES - European commission The European Commission has taken a step towards a substantial revision of NAIADES, the action programme in support of inland waterway transport, running until 2013. The revision of NAIADES will focus on concrete actions which will help realising the potential of inland waterway transport and boost its contribution to sustainable and efficient transport. Inland waterway transport is a safe mode of transport with low costs, a lot of spare capacity, no congestion, low noise levels and low energy consumption and carbon footprint. The revision of the NAIADES action programme is expected to lead to the adoption of the NAIADES II Communication foreseen in 2013. In its Staff Working Paper, the Commission Services presented concrete actions under preparation: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Staff Working Paper: "Towards NAIADES II" - Promoting, greening and integrating inland waterway transport in the single EU transport area
Transport: White paper 2011 - European commission Roadmap to a Single European Transport Area - Towards a competitive and resource efficient transport system The European Commission adopted a roadmap of 40 concrete initiatives for the next decade to build a competitive transport system that will increase mobility, remove major barriers in key areas and fuel growth and employment. At the same time, the proposals will dramatically reduce Europe's dependence on imported oil and cut carbon emissions in transport by 60% by 2050. By 2050, key goals will include: No more conventionally-fuelled cars in cities. 40% use of sustainable low carbon fuels in aviation; at least 40% cut in shipping emissions.
