Recycled Jewelry: Inspiration by LiveOAK Staff on November 10, 2008 Brazilian designer, Mana Bernades works with teenagers and students in Brazil teaching jewelry making and creative re-use. She sees luxury in seemingly unusable materials using mini-flasks, PET bottles, phone cards, toothpicks, hair clips, plastic netting, pearls & silver to create unique, modern jewelry crafted by hand. By using recycled materials, the Mana collection demonstrates that re-use can be beautiful and this is done through collaborative education engaging young people to create beauty through eco-friendly design. News for Seattle and the Northwest Most urban consumers are happy to leave farming to the farmers, but for those with a green thumb, it is getting easier to garden in the city. That's thanks, in part, to DIYers sharing ideas for reusing old materials to garden in and a new range of tools designed to get many more people involved with growing some of their own food. The U.N. While it's probably tough to sustain a family on a micro-garden, FAO research shows that a well-tended micro-garden of 11 square feet can produce as much as 200 tomatoes a year, 36 heads of lettuce every 60 days, 10 cabbages every 90 days, and 100 onions every 120 days. Sure, micro-gardens can easily be created out of plenty of scrap materials: potatoes grown in a bucket or trash can, for example, or wooden pallets turned into an herb garden. Earth Starter is one such start-up. The mat comes with seedballs (seeds mixed with clay and worm castings to enrich the soil, and chili powder to keep pests away). Copyright 2013 NPR.

Recycled Christmas Tree, how to make recycled Christmas ornaments All the decorations on our tree are made from things you would usually throw away. For example, the garland is made from plastic packing "peanuts" strung together on thread. We've cut out the pictures from old greeting cards, punched a small hole in the top, and added a ribbon. We've also made ornaments from pine cones and sweet gum seed balls. Even the tree itself was destined for the trash heap before a co-worker donated it for our use. Use your imagination and see what ornaments you can make from things you would normally throw away. Each year, 25 million extra tons of trash is generated between Thanksgiving and New Years in the U.S. Recycling Homepage

Hobbes gratuites Crochet Pattern I've finally decided to write up my Hobbes pattern and instead of selling it I'd like to give it to you for free. The reason he is free is because the creator of Calvin and Hobbes, Bill Watterson did not want to commercialize his work so keeping that in mind Please don't sell this pattern and don't sell the completed work. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I originally made this up for my son because of his love for Hobbes (he's 23 now) I armed myself with Watterson's brilliant drawings as a reference. I made this pattern to look as close as possible to the Hobbes' drawings . I realized that Hobbes could be broken down into basic shapes. He also had the muzzle of a cat so I looked to the famous Amineko cat. Once I got the shapes down I worked on size. Until I started making him I never realized how different Hobbes looks from a regular cat. His head and body are a lot longer thanan normal cat plus he has the shortest fattest legs. That caused me problems since tubular legs and arms don't want to bend. Resources:
Maker Mama Craft Blog: Thrifted Clock Redo One of the things I always see at thrift stores are random pot lids in cute colors without a pot to go with them. I came up with the idea of turning one into a clock while shopping at my local Goodwill the other day, with the thought that I'd purchase a clock kit at the craft store. But for the sake of keeping it as green as possible (and making one less shopping trip) I decided to give an old clock new life, and voilà, the thrifted clock redo was born! What makes this project even better is that supplies--and time--are minimal. Every clock is a little different, so inspect the mechanism on the back carefully to see if it looks detachable. Now just find a wall to hang your clock and listen to it's sweet little ticking. Disclosure: I received a gift card from Goodwill SA to purchase the thrifted items in the post.
The Micro Gardener - making it easy to grow your own in small spaces. Kitty Crochet One of the kids favorite things in their Christmas stockings this year was the quickest last minute gift ever… ok so I must admit it wasn’t quick later but… it was Christmas Eve and I was thinking of the things I didn’t get made for them that I’d wanted to. So on with it and enough rambling. I grabbed some cute scrapbook paper and cut out some “coupons” and wrote various things on them. One was for a special ice cream date with Daddy, one was for Mom to make something special for them, one was for a hug and tickle and snuggle (this one had no limit to the number of times it could be used.) Here is the finished revision with the free pattern. Pattern Crocheted with H hook and worsted weight yarn. Ears (2) Row 1: 4 sc in loop, tighten Row 2: 2sc, sc, 2sc, sc Row 3: 2sc, sc, sc (x2) sl to round off, finish off leaving a tail to sew to head Body Then *sc 2tog* x 3, finish stuffing, sew up Stitch eyes, mouth, and nose onto head and sew all pieces together.
