Inspired by Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” the story is about a romantic relationship between a white boy and a Puerto Rican girl who come from rival gangs. In this clip, the white gang, the Jets, sing a song. Quiz Teaching Ideas Play With Lyrics and Music: Music is a wonderful language acquisition tool. Students can be given copies of lyrics and sing them as a class, or in fun competitive “rounds” to see who sings best. (You might also use selections from The Times’s Press Play collection of new popular music.) Learn About Gangs: Explain that the video clip is about gangs,. Next, have students research why young people might join gangs, and compare those reasons for joining with the benefits they listed for being part of the groups they belong to. Use our questions for test preparation or just for fun.
