Modern Architecture | Real Virtual | Columbia University in the City of New York In architectural history, "modern" does not necessarily refer to a contemporaneous work, but to a particular style and ideology prevalent from the mid-nineteenth century to the 1970s. The architect and critic Sanford Kwinter goes as far as to use the term to describe particular themes in the intellectual life of ancient Greece. To him, modernism is a mode of thought and ontological position. The logic of modernist aesthetics and ideology become more clear when placed in their historical context. These intellectual underpinnings shaped the aesthetic program of high modernist architecture. It comes as no surprise that progressive modernists often took an antagonistic position to the societies they lived and worked in.

Lab ABSTRACT:QR Codes for Digital Nomads: QR_STENCILER and QR_HOBO_CODES are homebrew "infoviz graffiti" tools, intended for civic markup and in-situ information display. QR_STENCILER is a free, open-source, fully automated software utility that converts QR codes into vector-based stencil patterns suitable for laser cutting. The QR_STENCILER software was used to create the QR_HOBO_CODES, a collection of 100 stencil designs which, deployed in urban spaces, may be used to warn people about danger or clue them into good situations. Inspired by 19th Century "hobo symbols", these stencils can be understood as a covert markup scheme for urban spaces — providing directions, information, and warnings to digital nomads and other indigenterati. QR_STENCILER and QR_HOBO_CODES, a F.A.T. QR Hobo Code stencil in use. Closeup of a QR code lasercut in 1/8"-thick fiberboard. Examples of 19th- and 20th-Century "hobo signs". QR_STENCILER features.
Puma Urban Mobility Site *notcot in design , 13:41 Puma Urban Mobility - Ok, i’ve shown you the stuff… and gushed hard about the design and wood integration in the products already… but thats nothing compared to how i’m feeling about the icons and imagery on the site that goes with. I will let the screenshots speak for themselves, but i’m all over this one for: 1. the icons… esp when animated. *swoon* 2. the maps 3. the drop shadowed speech bubbles… oh and also the colors and flatness… as well as the old school “fit the pieces in” packing puzzles! Sidenote: on Puma iconography… remember these great inspirational ones on the door during construction? This should be what i have as my “away” image… Tags: bikes - fashion - UX

The assumed monstrosity of his project is beautifully expressed by a series of hand drawings which illustrate the intelligence of this design. found via the very useful ajnotebook Here is James Walker’s text about his project Robin Hood Gardens ‘Dense and Tense’. “When some concrete monstrosity — sorry, I mean modernist masterpiece — fails to make the cut despite having expert opinion behind it, let’s find a third way.” Like this: Like Loading...

How to become internet famous for $68 - Quartz Santiago Swallow may be one of the most famous people no one has heard of. His eyes fume from his Twitter profile: he is Hollywood-handsome with high cheekbones and dirty blond, collar-length hair. Next to his name is one of social media’s most prized possessions, Twitter’s blue “verified account” checkmark. Beneath it are numbers to make many in the online world jealous: Santiago Swallow has tens of thousands of followers. The tweets Swallow sends them are cryptic nuggets of wisdom that unroll like scrolls from digital fortune cookies: “Before you lose weight, find hope,” says one. Another: “To write is to live endlessly.” Swallow is a pure product of the Internet: a “speaker and thinker,” who specializes in “re-imagining self in the online age,” an apparent star of the prestigious TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) conference, and a hit at Austin’s annual art, technology and music event, South By South West (SXSW). This is what Santiago Swallow’s Twitter feed looked like.

Mesmerizing Marker Installations by Heike Weber If you liked the marker-drawn murals by Charlotte Mann as a way to decorate your room, you’ll also love this like-minded German artist Heike Weber. Based in Cologne, she uses permanent markers to create mesmerizing floor and wall drawings which sometimes cover up to 5000 square ft. By carefully planning and controlling the white spaces between each line, Heike gives her drawings a 3D feeling. The space around the viewer may seem to be constantly swirling and floating, and you might find yourself losing the ground under your feet. Besides her meticulous marker drawings, Heike also applies various linear techniques to her paper works and also does photography, sculpture and object creation.
