A good task lamp embodies all the best aspects of great design—functionality, simplicity, durability, and timelessness.” A few months ago we wrote that in our newsletter. There are many task lamps out there, and they take a lot of different forms. ILLUMINATI: INTERVIEW WITH PAUL MASSIE OF CHRISTIAAN+PLANCK | LIGHTFORM blog Paul and Christopher Massie began their careers designing together as Massieoffice in 2003. They were approached by Design Within Reach to sell their massively successful Flying Vee Shelves and quickly made a name for themselves as a progressive design duo to watch. Fast forward to 2009 and the Massie brothers have begun a new and more concentrated endeavour – Christiaan+Planck - a design studio focused exclusively on lighting, guided by an ethos grounded in refinement, simplicity and high quality, domestic production. Probably best known for the Sentry Pendants, now sold and distributed by Spanish lighting company Metalarte and with a growing number of custom projects to add to their roster, Christiaan+Planck are proving the fortitude of their craft. Lightform caught up with Paul Massie and to ask him about his thoughts on Canadian design, his sources of inspiration and how it all began. Tell us the story about how Christiaan+Planck began. C+P We started Christiaan+Planck in late 2009.
Metalarte SPOTLIGHT: MARSET PLEAT BOX | LIGHTFORM blog One of the newest additions to the Marset product line up is a result of a pioneering collaboration with Xavier Mañosa, a master ceramicist from Barcelona, and the Mashallah (fashion and product design) Studio based out of Berlin. The Pleat Box is made of ceramic and the inspiration for its silhouette comes from the look of creases in fabric. Hande Akçayli & Murat Koçyigit of Mashallah Studio design and sculpt in a completely digital environment using advanced design software. More pictures and information, as well as an impressive project …. The Pleat Box comes in 4 different shapes and sizes so you can choose from a 47cm, 36cm, 24cm & 13cm diameter. NEMO – CASSINA: NEW LIGHTS OF 2011 | LIGHTFORM blog Only a few months ago we wrote about our impressions of Nemo-Cassina‘s new products when we went to visit them in Milan at Salone Internazionale Del Mobile and now they’ve sent us their new 2011 product brochure to formally introduce the many new and beautiful additions to the Nemo “Classici” and “Contemporanei” lines. As the lighting division of Cassina, Nemo has followed closely in Cassina’s tradition of collaborating with some of the most influential and compelling architects and designers of the twentieth century. Their designers have been at the forefront of innovation in the use of new materials and have all produced designs that have a very particular aura of minimalist elegance. Here in this Brochure they introduce the newest of their “Classici” series with works by Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, Franco Albini and Mario Bellini. THE BEST OF: ARCING FLOOR LAMPS | LIGHTFORM blog We get asked about these a lot, and for good reason. The arcing floor lamp has been a fixture of contemporary spaces since Achille Castiglioni unveiled his Arco Lamp, produced by Flos in 1962. Frustrated by the task of illuminating dining tables in which ceiling electrical outputs were nowhere close to the centre of the table, Castiglioni sought to create a solution. The Arco was that very solution, allowing a suspended source of illumination for areas that may not be conducive for a pendant. The iconic arc has since been remade, rethought and revisited by designers and architects throughout the years, developing the concept of the arcing floor lamp into something new and something special with each new transformation. Here, we’ve compiled a list of some our favourites since 1962.
