ESRI Geo-tagged Tweets It seems the ever evolving Geo Viewer from ESRI (recall the Flex viewer that ESRI has been building on all week) now incorporates the ability to search and display Geo Tagged Tweets. Using the app, select the Tools icon (cube), then select the Twitter Option. This reveals a Twitter results box in the lower right region. Then select the "Draw Search Area" option (purple circle) and click on an area on the map dragging the mouse to create a radial search region. Resulting tweets that are geo tagged within the area will be displayed. One has to wonder that if communications permitted, individuals that require assistance could be sending geo located Twitter Tweets quickly and easily via their mobile, enabling relatively accurate location of those needing help.

Natural Disasters Conflict Refugees/IDPs All you need KAMPALA, 7 September 2010 (IRIN) - An online database of people separated from relatives by conflict or natural disasters can now be accessed by mobile phone, thanks to a joint venture between the UN, an NGO and two private sector companies. Refugees United has entries for some 4,500 people seeking missing friends and family members, and “this grows by hundreds every week, as we reach out to refugees in camps and urban areas”, according to managing director Christopher Mikkelsen. Now that the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, mobile phone manufacturer Ericsson, and service provider MTN have teamed up with Refugees United, users no longer need to find a computer with internet access: a mobile phone suffices. “Refugees United and Ericsson distribute phones on a test level currently to the UNHCR and other organizations throughout the pilot,” Mikkelsen told IRIN by email. The pilot is taking place in Uganda and is set to be expanded soon to Sudan and Kenya and then globally.

Dale Zak: Mobile Volunteerism This past Wednesday I had the honor of speaking on mobile volunteerism at Mobile Tech Training during Net Change Week in Toronto. In my talk I shared some examples how mobiles are aiding traditional volunteerism, are allowing new forms of micro-volunteerism as well as a few interesting ways devices are being used to indirectly volunteer for a cause. We are entering an incredibly exciting time. A Twitteraholic’s Guide to tweets, hashtags, and all things Twitter Most educators who learn to use Twitter effectively say they learn more from their personal learning network (PLN) on Twitter than they’ve achieved from any other forms of professional development or personal learning. Unfortunately educators often dismiss Twitter, or fail to see the value of Twitter, when they’re first introduced to Twitter. Our aim of this post is to provide all the information you need to learn how to use Twitter effectively as an educator. We regularly update this post with new information.

Ushahidi Racking up Downloads The Ushahidi platform’s growing use has been astounding to say the least. The platform has been download almost 4,000 times. On top of that, our mobile applications (including the Android Oil Spill reporter by Henry Addo) have been downloaded more than 3,700 times. As an organization that is barely two years old, it is encouraging to see adoption of the platform in various countries and for diverse uses. Be it election monitoring in Burundi, Snowmaggedon in D.C., or preventing forest forest fires in Italy, it is very encouraging to the development team to see people around the world using the platform to solve local problems.
