Life Beyond Logic System of a Down: Politics, Justice, Rock and Roll February 2nd, 2004 Serj Tankian, lead singer of System of a Down, talks to Ken Wilber about the intersection between art and politics, discussing some of the most important aspects of his life that contribute to the "post-everything" bouquet of sound that is System of a Down. Serj Tankian, lead singer of System of a Down, voted the #1 band of 2002 by leading critics, is one of the most original and passionate of today's artists, and one of Integral Institute's favorite contributors to our ongoing conversation on the avant garde. With a surging and cacophonic presentation, System of a Down simply can't be pigeonholed—a type of genre-busting transcendental howl. All four members of System are of Armenian heritage, and Serj begins the conversation by commenting on their activities with the Armenian National Committee of America and its efforts to hold the US to its commitments to the Genocide Convention. But the conversation is far from morbid. Sign up or log in to start the conversation!
How to Help Someone Who Won’t Help Themselves “We work on ourselves in order to help others, but also we help others in order to work on ourselves.” ~Pema Chodron Recently I got into a hypothetical conversation with someone who very quickly turned hostile and accusatory. Let’s call her Jane. My first instinct was to get defensive, but then I realized this subject was quite raw for Jane, and there was likely something going on below the surface. Usually when people are combative seemingly without cause, there’s some underlying pain fueling it. As we got to the root of things, I learned that Jane was holding onto anger toward someone she once loved, and she felt a strong, driving need to convince people that this other person was wrong. Since she acknowledged that she’d been feeling depressed, lonely, and helpless, I felt obligated to at least try to help her see things from a different perspective. She was committed to being angry and hurt, and all she wanted from me was validation that she was justified. So what do we want? 1. 2. 3.

The Economics of Happiness When I was 21, I told my father that I didn’t want to work with him any longer at the ice cream company he co-founded, Baskin-Robbins, and I didn’t want to depend on his financial achievements. I did not want to have a trust fund or any other access to or dependence on his money. I wanted to discover and live my own values, and I knew that I wasn’t strong enough to do that if I remained tethered, even a little, to my father’s fortune. I left Baskin-Robbins and the money my father had made selling ice cream because I didn’t want to live a life of affluence based on a product that could harm people’s health. I also recoiled at the idea of inheriting a life of privilege while so many others had to struggle for their basic livelihood. © narvikk I didn’t take the steps I did because I thought money is bad. There seem to be two schools of thought about the relationship between money and happiness: On the one hand, there are those who say money isn’t that important.

What is a non-dual God? | A Course in Miracles Explained We have confirmed our suspicions: It is indeed a old Caucasian man with a wizened face and a long beard in the sky, sagely presiding over the Earth. The Bible doesn’t really help either: So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. The truth is far from this. “Man made ‘God’ in his own image. Si Dieu nous a faits à son image, nous le lui avons bien rendu. This old man is not our creator, but is our creation. (For an excellent summary of the 4 main paradigms of any religious / spiritual system regarding ‘God’, please read The Four Major Attitudes of Learning in the Return to God as entailed in The Disappearance of the Universe) God as described by ACIM is a non-dualistic God, ie. completely outside of duality. The Tao that can be spoken of Is not the Everlasting Tao The name that can be named Is not the Everlasting name (Chapter 1) Oneness is simply the idea God is. Seven Easy Ways To Instantly Power Up Your Copy Written By: Tina Lorenz, Guest Author As a direct response copywriter, marketing strategist, and mentor, I find a lot of marketers get frustrated and intimidated when they begin writing copy for their business. 7 Ways to Have More by Owning Less, by Maria Popova Inconspicuous consumption, or what lunching ladies have to do with social web karma. Stuff. We all accumulate it and eventually form all kinds of emotional attachments to it. (Arguably, because the marketing machine of the 20th century has conditioned us to do so.) But digital platforms and cloud-based tools are making it increasingly easy to have all the things we want without actually owning them. Because, as Wired founder and notable futurist Kevin Kelly once put it, “access is better than ownership.” The age of keeping up with the Jonses is over. Transparent user ratings, transaction histories and privacy controls make the sharing process simple and safe, while automated calendars and reminders ensure the safe return of loaned items. Give NeighborGoods a shot by creating a sharing group for your apartment building, campus, office, or reading group — both your wallet and your social life will thank you.
