the Frozen Fountain Shippo Cloisonné is an old enamel technique perfected in Japan. It is a technique whereby fine silver strips are applied to copper to form a design. Within these lines, enamel in different colours is repeatedly poured, until the desired shade is achieved. It is then fired and finally polished many times. Hella has long held a desire to do "something" with this technique. Scholten & Baijings New / THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO New / COLOUR INSTALLATION New / LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL Fashion Food Consumers doesn’t need to struggle to fit the large round fruit in their refrigerators anymore. Farmers in Japan came up with the idea of making a cube-shaped watermelon which could easily be packed and stored. It retails from 10,000 yen to 20,000 yen ($83 to $174 USD) and usually caters to the fashion-conscious. To make it happen, farmers grew the melons in glass cases and the fruit then naturally assumed the same shape. Today the cuboid watermelons are hand-picked and shipped all over Japan.
Home - Textile Design Laboratory “Make A Wish” by Bettina Nissen “Make A Wish” interprets the moment of happiness when blowing out the candles on a cake. The iconic birthday cake candleholder is transformed into a piece of jewelry that serves as a keepsake of a special day. Buried in a cake as surprise or presented in its beautiful packaging “Make A Wish” will turn anyone’s birthday into a memorable event. This new product is fabricated using a new additive manufacturing technique better known as 3D Printing or Rapid Prototyping, where a high power laser fuses small particles of plastic or metal into a 3-dimensional object. The ‘Make A Wish’ rings are currently available in 5 material or colour options and 4 ring sizes. Buy here: www.bettinanissen.bigcartel.com.
parcours Katie Niewodowski Katie Niewodowski’s cellular sculptures are both amazing and thought-provoking. She writes in her artist statement: “I am fascinated with the paradoxical similarities of the cancer cell and the healthy human egg. Both have the potential for extraordinary growth. Yet while the cancer cell grows, it naively destroys… the effect is both seductive and disquieting.”
