Super Fancy Cake Decorating Tutorial for Broke Monkeys

Super Fancy Cake Decorating Tutorial for Broke Monkeys
This is a tutorial to show you how to decorate a cake that makes you look pretty clever. The beauty of this method is that you can put anything you darn well want on a cake. Your kid likes a certain team and you don't trust Stuffmart Bakery? No problemo. All you need is a picture off the webz (or a coloring book page, or a drawing you did yourself) and you can make any design you want. In this case, Gater wanted a "Dora/Princess" cake. First, bake your cake and let it cool thoroughly. Make your icing; a buttercream made with butter is best. *When you make your icing, you will want to sift the powdered sugar and mix the icing up quickly so you don't get lumps. Ice your cake. Print out a coloring page, and make sure it is the right size for the top of your cake. It is a good idea at this stage to decide how many colors you want to use in your finished design. Trim your coloring page, and tape it to the back side of a flat piece of glass. Mix up the colors you will need for your design. Related:  Breads and Cakes

Triple-Lemon Blueberry Layer Cake Happy Wednesday! I hope you had a wonderful Valentine’s Day with all of your lovies. I woke up yesterday morning, with a sudden and unrelenting need for sunshine–in any form. For what I think was the first time, rather than craving a particular food (or ingredient), I was craving a colour: yellow! Naturally, a lemon confection immediately came to mind, so I figured it was time to bake a Lemon-Blueberry Layer Cake. So here it is! If you haven’t made lemon curd before, I highly recommend it. While we’re on the topic of sweet sunshine-y goodness, here are my little blueberry bursts playing while the cake layers were baking. We had a great day yesterday, while we baked the cakes. Even if it was just in our hearts (and bellies) . . . Triple-Lemon Blueberry Layer Cake Ingredients For the Cake: For the Frosting: Instructions Preheat oven to 350°F. Cream butter and lemon zest in bowl of electric mixer fitted with paddle attachment, about 3 minutes. Assembly of the Triple-Lemon Blueberry Layer Cake:

Lucky Leaf Blueberry Coffee Cake I went to Camp Blogaway over the weekend, and to celebrate I baked a coffee cake! This year Luck Leaf sponsored* my trip to Camp Blogaway and asked me to create a new recipe perfect for a weekend in the mountains. Along with some fun items to give to some lucky campers – like muffin liners, pie carriers, samples of their Premium Fruit Pie Fillings, and funky retro timers – I brought this cake to share. After dinner, while we were all getting to know one another a little better, I shared slices of cake with some VERY happy campers! This cake has a rustic, homemade look, and when you slice into the cake you fine layer upon layer of moist cinnamon cake, Lucky Leaf Premium Blueberry Pie Filling, and toasty flaked almonds. On the top I made a buttery almond crumble to add some sweet crunch. So, a HUGE thank you Lucky Leaf for sending me to camp. Perfect Polish Every Time! Let's talk toes. And eyes. Funny how the two effect one another. My aging eyes are making it hard to paint my toenails. All that's standing between your old eyes and Perfect Polish is a cuticle stick, a Q-Tip, and greasy lotion. Put some lotion onto a Q-Tip Wipe it around your nail, being careful to not get it ON your nail. Use the cuticle stick to wipe away the extra. That's all it takes! Hope this little trick helps! I'm linking up to these parties this week!

raspberry buttermilk cake As you may have guessed, I have a serious soft spot for everyday cakes.* I call them Dinner Party Cakes. Or Potluck Cakes. Or I Heard You Were Coming and So I Baked You a Cake, cakes. This one was no exception. It was totally worth the wait. * One day, soon hopefully, I will put all of the “everyday cakes” on this site on one topic page. Two years ago: Cellophane Noodle Salad with Roast Pork… promise me you’ll make this on the grill this weekend, m’kay? Raspberry Buttermilk Cake Adapted from Gourmet, June 2009 You can just ignore the word “raspberry” up there and swap it up with any which berry you please, like blackberries or blueberries or bits of strawberries or all of the above. By the way, I was having a “moment” when I made this and for once, remembered to weigh my ingredients as I measured them, for all of you people out there that know weighing is way easier than dirtying a zillion cups and spoons. Preheat oven to 400°F with rack in middle.

Fresh Strawberry Yogurt Cake Fresh Strawberry Yogurt Cake Fresh Strawberry Yogurt Cake Every time I take the kids berry picking, I think to myself, “I could totally do this. I could farm… It’s hard work, but peaceful and gratifying.” Then I imagine us buying a large piece of land and reinventing our life. I envision myself in overalls and work boots, driving a tractor. This year is the first year we are going to give it a whirl–that is, be involved in a communal garden. I still like to pretend, as we’re picking berries, that I somehow had a part in cultivating them. This super moist cake is the perfect way to CELEBRATE juicy berries! Deep-Dish Chocolate Chip Cookie for One & Healthy Food For Living By Lauren Zembron, on July 20th, 2012 I know, I know… it seems as though I’ve been posting sweet recipe after sweet recipe (with a little something cheesy thrown in); but you see, after what seemed like a long time during which sweets were unappealing during my first trimester, (what can I say, pregnancy does some strange things to your body!), they’re apparently back with a vengeance on my appetite’s menu. Sooooo if you’re a sweet freak like me, all I can say about my recent recipe post pattern is: you’re welcome. And if you’re not? Now let’s get to this deep-dish cookie. Jenny from Picky Palate recently posted a recipe for a microwavable chocolate chip cookie made in a ramekin that looked so unbelievably delicious I had to make my own (slightly healthier) version. I cut out half of the sugar, subbed in whole wheat pastry flour, and used grain-sweetened chocolate chips (which have less sugar than semi-sweet chips). Now I’m under no delusion that even my version is healthy.
