The aim of the Biblefresh initiative is to encourage a greater confidence and passion for Scripture across the Church. For 2011, Biblefresh became a movement of hundreds of churches, agencies, colleges, festivals and denominations to encourage people, particularly within the church, to stop viewing the Bible as a toxic text, and find new ways to engage with passion with the Bible. 2011 was the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Version of the Bible and therefore the Evangelical Alliance identified a unique opportunity for the Church to focus its attention on the Word of God. Churches, and their members, were asked to look for opportunities to raise levels of Biblical understanding through the following four areas: The impetus for The Big Bible Project came from Biblefresh (as well as The Big Read in the NorthEast), especially drawing upon this aim:
