This Microbial Battery Makes Power And Water From Poop And Pollution | Co.Exist | World changing ideas and innovation The idea of sewage-powered devices is not new. In fact, it’s existed for more than a century. But finding a particularly efficient (and cost-effective) version of microbial fuel cell technology has been an ongoing challenge for engineers. Researchers at Stanford University say they’ve developed a battery that can convert some 30% of the energy of dissolved organic matter in wastewater into electricity, the same proportion of energy that solar cells can harvest from sunlight. Here's the science: Researchers Yi Cui, Craig Criddle, Xing Xie, and their team realized that the oxygen in their microbial fuel cell design was causing problems. So the researchers got rid of the membrane setup. By taking oxygen out of the equation, and instead using silver oxide in place of the cathode, the team just has to oxidize the electrode (silver oxide) when it gets too loaded with electrons and turns into a hunk of silver. Still, there’s a couple of caveats. "It's a very simple device," Criddle says.

Six Key Lessons from a Design Legend (a before-and-after) | GiftRocket Blog When we first built GiftRocket 1.0, our team was absent designers. As the only one without a CS degree, I ended up spending a few weeks reading design books and mocking up the site before our March launch. Eventually we recruited a professional designer named Mike Kus to help us out. We liked his emphasis on large text, illustration, and simplicity. I did a quick comparison of the before and after, and wanted to point out some things any developer can do to improve the feel of their site. 1. We were extremely conservative when we started, So we made the site… blue and gray. Mike, experienced and unhesitant, presented the cream, gold, and black palette we currently use. 2. We suffered from two contrast issues. Mike approached the app as a cousin to the website, using the same branding but inverting colors and layout. 3. Our Yelp business icons started out tiny at 60px by 60px. Moreover, in certain places he put a padded border around images, which made them appear even larger. 4. 5. 6.
