For years one of my favorite Chrome extensions has been Clearly from Evernote. It is a simple extension that does an awesome thing. When you click the Clearly extension it cleans up the web page you are reading by removing ads, comments, backgrounds, and all other distracting images and elements, leaving only the core content of the page in an easy to read format. The extension is especially useful for students to help them focus on what they are reading when websites can be full of so many distractions. Unfortunately it is being discontinued. Evernote announced on their blog that as of January 22, 2016 they will no longer be supporting or offering Clearly. So what alternatives are the for Clearly? goo.gl URL Shortener Highlighting Tool: A Great Google Add-On Resource | Tech In Pedagogy Add-ons are a great resource to use in Google Drive. They open a host of options when using Google Apps. There are add-ons available for several of the different available apps. These include self grading add-ons for Google Forms like Flubaroo and Easy Bib for easing the task of citing your sources when writing a research paper in Docs. There are a lot of possibilities and add-ons exist for almost any task you would want to accomplish in a particular App like Docs or Forms. One add-on I have found that has a lot of potential is Highlight Tool. Highlighting add-ons are fairly straightforward. You can use them to highlight sections of text using a vertical pane that appears on the right side of your open doc. For example, you can copy and paste articles into a Google Doc and ask the students to highlight appropriate examples of pro arguments, con arguments, and quotes in the resource text. This does bring me to the feature that takes I hope you find this information helpful.
5 Chrome Apps and Extensions to Help ESL Learners Last week in Stockholm, I attended the Google summit and it blew my mind. Although I’m still in beta shock and am coming to terms of how I will reinvent my practice with what I learned, there were some immediate take aways with apps and extensions to the chrome browser. Although these are for general use, I can’t help but think of how useful these would be to my students who are learning English as a second language. 1. App that allows any website to be read to the viewer. 2. This app works very much like Announcify but instead of having the entire article read, the viewer can merely select sentences or paragraphs with which they are having difficulty. 3. This is great for any students who may want an entire webpage read to them in their native language. 4. I’m not advocating apathy here, but give this a chance. 5. This is a must have for any student, not just ESL learners. What Chrome extensions and apps have you found useful with ESL learners?
