Historically Hardcore - Fake Smithsonian Ads Jenny Burrows and Matt Kappler teamed up to create “Historically Hardcore,” a lovingly crafted series of ads for the Smithsonian that one-up the exploits of modern-day rockers and rappers with tales of historic figures, well, being hardcore. The ads are not official Smithsonian copy, however, but were a portfolio project for both artists. At that, over the past few days they have stirred up a ton of interest in history and in the Smithsonian online, particularly among the younger audience they were trying to reach with their light tone and contemporary references. Mission accomplished, right? Well, they were less than pleased about the attention the posters were getting and requested that I take them down immediately. As Burrows points out, the Smithsonian’s reaction is understandable from a branding perspective, but it is really a shame that it pushed away free, effective ads that engaged young people. Electroboutique Present A Twisted Take On Consumerism And Technology Invisible Message Re-appropriating the vernacular of the digital world and twisting it so it becomes a distorted, grotesque funhouse mirror reflection of both function and aesthetic is exactly what Russian artists Alexei Shulgin and Aristarkh Chernyshev (aka Electroboutique) aim to do. Their current pop-up exhibition at the Science Museum in London (on view till 14th February 2012) features beautifully crafted electrical products that, at first blush, seem all too familiar—iProducts, LED displays, flat screen TVs—but there’s something wrong with them. They’ve become enlarged, deformed, bent out of shape, melted like Dalí’s clocks or broken by an unseen hand. These custom-made electronic products, created with live data and bespoke software, not only look like misshapen, skewed versions of the products we all know and love, many of them are interactive too, playing with ideas about technology and design, consumerism, capitalism, media control, and corporate social responsibility. wowPod
What We See vs. What Kids See I think it’s safe to say that kids look at things a lot differently than us grown-ups. To this end, I hold M&M duels. Taking two candies between my thumb and forefinger, I apply pressure, squeezing them together until one of them cracks and splinters. That is the "loser," and I eat the inferior one immediately. I have found that, in general, the brown and red M&Ms are tougher, and the newer blue ones are genetically inferior. Occasionally I will get a mutation, a candy that is misshapen, or pointier, or flatter than the rest. When I reach the end of the pack, I am left with one M&M, the strongest of the herd. This week they wrote back to thank me, and sent me a coupon for a free 1/2 pound bag of plain M&Ms. There can be only one.
