CCSS Math - Resources for all State Standards STatistics Education Web (STEW) One of the goals of the American Statistical Association is to improve statistics education at all levels. Through the STatistics Education Web (STEW), the ASA is reaching out to K-12 mathematics and science teachers who teach statistics concepts in their classrooms. STEW is an online resource for peer-reviewed lesson plans for K-12 teachers. Statistics and probability concepts are included in K-12 curriculum standards, in particular the Common Core State Standards, and on state and national exams; however, few K-12 teachers have formal training or applied experience with statistical concepts. STEW lesson plans identify both the statistical concepts being developed and the age range appropriate for its use. Lesson Plans Grades K - 5 Grades 6 - 8 Grades 9 - 12

Exit Slip Formative Assessment Strategy No matter what you call it, the exit slip is a super, quick, little assessment.I had to come up with a plan for how to administer and check the exit slips in my science classes. So, I designed a bulletin board to house the materials. I'm actually not finished. It seems that everything I do needs some revision. Currently, I pass out the slips and the students place them in the red folders. After answering two questions that appear on the smart board at the conclusion of a lesson, each student will place his/her exit slip into the appropriate folder. Or I should ask, did they think they understood the concepts? Cheers!

Smokey Bear Takes Algebra To begin the lesson, gather background knowledge from the students about wildfires. Where are Smokey Bear billboards located? Why are these signs important to park visitors? What is the difference between a high danger of forest fire and a very high danger? What are some of the extreme losses that occur during uncontrollable fires? To get students thinking about the factors that are considered when rating fire-danger, distribute copies of the Meet Smokey Bear activity sheet. Next, explain to students how the National Fire Danger Rating System, or NFDRS, is a tool used for predicting and controlling fires. Distribute the Angstrom Index activity sheet, and explain that this index is a simpler precursor to the NFDRS. Note: Teachers may wish to rewrite the formula in terms of a Fahrenheit scale for students unfamiliar with Celsius temperatures. Next, students will examine another rating system, the Nesterov Index. Distribute the Nesterov Index activity sheet. Solutions to Meet Smokey Bear
