Media Console
Over the last ten years, we've embraced WIMP—windows, icons, mouse (or menus), and pointers—as our computer interface of choice. But WIMP won't work in every situation. Our latest utility, the PC Magazine Media Console, whacks WIMP and returns to a character-based interface, but not because we're nostalgic. Sometimes you just have to go back to go forward. Why? Well, look at that computer screen in front of you. But as our computers become digital–media repositories and playback devices, 18 inches just doesn't cut it anymore. Today, most notebook computers—and a large number of desktops—can display on a standard TV screen. If you've ever used a TiVo digital video recorder, you know how powerful a character-based interface can be when viewed from across the room. These days, we find ourselves wishing more and more that we had a TiVo-like interface for our computers to let us browse, play video and audio, and look at photographs while sitting on a couch across the room.
