Wie bei Wikipedia baut es nahezu vollständig darauf, dass weltweit freiwillige Nutzer die Karten erstellen, ergänzen und aktualisieren. Hintergrund Das Projekt wurde 2004 von Steve Coast ins Leben gerufen und im April 2006 wurde eine Foundation gegründet. Oberste Regel ist, damit man von jeglichen Urheberrechtsproblemen verschont bleibt, eben keine urheberrechtsgeschützten Karten als Vorlagen zu verwenden. Das betrifft sowohl das Abzeichnen von Wegen und Merkmalen wie auch die Benennung von Strassen etc. Was anfangs naturgemäss sehr langsam anfing wird mittlerweile (Februar 2009) von über 50000 Mitmachern, davon ca. 10% aktiv gepflegt und weiterentwickelt.
