The Making of Arduino For Banzi, this is perhaps the most important impact of Arduino: the democratization of engineering. "Fifty years ago, to write software you needed people in white aprons who knew everything about vacuum tubes. Now, even my mom can program," Banzi says. "We’ve enabled a lot of people to create products themselves." Not all engineers love Arduino. To fuel greater adoption of Arduino, the team is exploring how to integrate it more deeply into the education system, from grade schools to colleges. But spreading the Arduino gospel is only part of the challenge. Arduino has also created its own cottage industry for DIY electronics. Because the team can’t afford to stock hundreds of thousands of boards, they instead produce anywhere from 100 to 3000 per day at a manufacturing facility near Ivrea. The Arduino team is now earning enough to support two of its members as full-time employees and is making plans to bring even more circuit board power to the people.
Create a Killer Business Plan - Martha Stewart Community You've got the idea, now package it well! The way you present your company and vision will determine whether you get the right financial partners and the right deal. Marketing Your IdeaLife is marketing. We're constantly being pitched to as consumers, yet we also market our products, our ideas, and ourselves personally and professionally. But where do so many early-stage entrepreneurs go wrong? They fail to sell their start-up effectively. As a former entrepreneur and a start-up consultant today, I've certainly seen more business plans than I care to remember. Make your business plan shine with the three "Cs" to success: Be ConciseA concise plan provides a simple explanation for why the business is a great idea, as well as how it will be executed. Be CompellingThe goal is to make your company appear to be deeply compelling. Be CompleteYou must have a trusted third party review your plan to ensure it addresses all possible issues an investor may have. Wow!
Maker Education Initiative | Every Child a Maker Smart Materials Welcome to this interactive handbook on Smart materials for designers, it should be your key to many new and exciting products that will be possible only if you use Smart materials. Using a simple table at the bottom of this page, explore the options. However, you are probably wondering what are Smart materials, how do they work and what can I do with them? Take a look round and let your imagination runs free over the possibilities. What are smart materials? This sounds a simple question but is not that easy to answer beyond the obvious, and really not too helpful statement "a material that displays smart behaviour". Smart behaviour occurs when a material can sense a stimulus from its environment and react to it in a useful, reliable, reproducible and usually reversible manner. SMART materials in Products To further explain, an example material from familiar items would help. How to use this guide? Explanation of Traffic light System The information appear in a new window each time.
(Rethinking) Makerspaces Kids have always made in my library. We encouraged digital and visual and dramatic and rhetorical creativity before, during, and after school. But for a while, I’ve questioned the value of using already heavily used real estate to randomly carve out space for a 3D printer, electronics stations and sewing machines. I had my doubts about the makerspace movement in school libraries. A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to chat with Amos Blanton, project manager of the Scratch online community, and a member of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at MIT Media Lab. On his profile Amos notes: I design and sustain creative learning environments for people with agency. Amos makes the case for makerspaces as powerful, authentic, relevant learning experiences, and for when and why library may be the very right space to create a makerspace. Here’s the video of our chat and a few of key points to consider before adopting a maker culture for libraries Amos’ key points:
The Fakeproject Corporation of America Presents: A Cheap, Easy, and Scandinavian WiFi Antenna. HI INTERNETS! This page is about something I did in Moscow in 2006. I answered many questions about the project (including "IS IT REAL OMG") here. I just moved to Moscow, to a nice flat in the center. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands. Costs: Electrical tape, 9 Rubles. According to my measurements, the "Soare" napkin ring is capable of a 5-7dB signal boost, when the ceramic antenna element of the WiFi adapter is placed at the focal point. After some further testing, I found that removing the plastic casing of the WiFi adapter gave an additional signal boost (and made it easier to place the antenna). I'm uploading from this apparatus now, hunched over my laptop in my kitchen. Daniel Reetz.
The 5 Most Insulting Ways Products Are Advertised to Men It wasn't so long ago that pipe-smoking men in dark suits could sell their products to women with a patronizing pat on the head and a wink. Those days went the way of the cocktail lunch, but sexism still rages in the advertising world. It's just that now, everybody gets in on it. And just as ads in the 1950s assumed that all women were housewives desperate for new ways to starch their husbands' shirts, advertisers today demonstrate an extremely low opinion of their male customers. That's why there are so many ad campaigns that ... #5. Photos.com Most of us aren't old enough to remember back when women were seen as nothing more than baby-making servants with childlike brains, but if vintage advertisements are to be believed, we're lucky humanity didn't just devolve into a species of red-lipped cretins. Via Blogs.babble.comFinally, a Plan B for men too drunk on lunch martinis to open their own ketchup. But you see, trucks are manly, and doing science and math are unmanly. "Arrowdie-whatics?
Bubble Machine These are the tools and materials that I used for my bubble machine. Yours will differ greatly depending on what you have available. This is a great project to do with scraps, and odds and ends all hacked together. It doesn't have to look amazing to be a lot of fun, it just has to work. To make it easier for others to reproduce this, I've done away with my normal format of exactly what to use and instead broken it down into the five main components the machine's made from. Trough: To hold the bubble solution. Bubble Ring: A ring of holes that will spin slowly through the trough picking up the bubble solution. Motion: A slowly moving motor to spin the bubble ring. Blower: Something with a bit of puff. Power: A power source or two for the blower and spinner. You'll also need nuts, bolts, hot glue or superglue to hold everything together. The files I used for laser cutting are included in this step.

Bingo. Of course, part of the issue is having a soldering iron at the right temp with a properly tinned tip. Newbies aren't using soldering stations but a cheap iron they got at rat shack (You have questions? I don't expect to ever master tricky stuff like smts or even multilayer pcbs so I'm not much better then a newbie, anyway - and I totally suck at sweating pipe joints. Ah, well... Apple’s Middle finger: It’s Pointed at You Let’s get this clear right off the start: Apple makes some absolutely fantastic products. The issue is not with the quality of their products, but the attitude and manner in which the company operates. They are giving their customers the middle finger, and for some reason the customers are thanking them for it. I make the argument that it doesn’t have to be this way. Apple makes luxury products. Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem: The #1 Mathematical Discovery of the 20th Century In 1931, Kurt Gödel delivered a devastating blow to the mathematicians of his time In 1931, the young mathematician Kurt Gödel made a landmark discovery, as powerful as anything Albert Einstein developed. Gödel’s discovery not only applied to mathematics but literally all branches of science, logic and human knowledge. Oddly, few people know anything about it. Allow me to tell you the story. Mathematicians love proofs. So for example if you studied high school Geometry, you’ve done the exercises where you prove all kinds of things about triangles based on a list of theorems. That high school geometry book is built on Euclid’s five postulates. Yes, it does seem perfectly reasonable that a line can be extended infinitely in both directions, but no one has been able to PROVE that. Towering mathematical geniuses were frustrated for 2000+ years because they couldn’t prove all their theorems. “I am lying.” 1. 1.
