Onscreen Passcode and Configurator support for AppleTV Deployments With the latest release of both AppleTV 5.1 and iOS 6 Apple takes steps to provide better enterprise support for the AppleTV. In an earlier post (Considerations for deploying the AppleTV in your school or enterprise) I pointed out that there needed to be better options for centralized management and a more robust way to deal with passwords. Apple’s taken steps to improve both of these. Prior to the 5.1 update you could set a password to control AirPlay access to your AppleTV. Once entered into the iPad the password was stored in the device. With the 5.1 release Apple has introduced an onscreen passcode that is required to before you can begin AirPlaying to the device. One early concern we had during testing was the connection time-out between the AppleTV and the connected iPad. The addition of Configurator support for the AppleTV is a good first step in providing enterprise configuration support.

.bash_profile vs .bashrc When working with Linux, Unix, and Mac OS X, I always forget which bash config file to edit when I want to set my PATH and other environmental variables for my shell. Should you edit .bash_profile or .bashrc in your home directory? You can put configurations in either file, and you can create either if it doesn’t exist. But why two different files? According to the bash man page, .bash_profile is executed for login shells, while .bashrc is executed for interactive non-login shells. What is a login or non-login shell? When you login (type username and password) via console, either sitting at the machine, or remotely via ssh: .bash_profile is executed to configure your shell before the initial command prompt. But, if you’ve already logged into your machine and open a new terminal window (xterm) inside Gnome or KDE, then .bashrc is executed before the window command prompt. .bashrc is also run when you start a new bash instance by typing /bin/bash in a terminal. Why two different files?
Considerations for deploying the AppleTV in your school or enterprise. AppleTV is awesome! I’ve had one in my home for years and I am really excited about what you can do with these devices and particularly AirPlay. We are beginning to look at using the AppleTV in our school as part of our iPad deployment but much like the iPads themselves we are in the position of trying to figure out how to deploy and manage a consumer device in the enterprise (schools to all of you). The reason for considering the use of the AppleTV in the classroom has everything to do (for us) with AirPlay. The ability to give any student the opportunity to share what they are doing on their device with the class and demonstrate their learning is amazing — - can you say bye-bye Smartboards! But as I play with this idea and discuss it with my colleagues there are some management issues and questions that I have. 1. As it stands, in order to set the name or password to the device you need to be in the room with that device. 2. 3. 4.

Lion's FileVault 2 and disk restore: caveat encryptor When Mac OS X 10.7 Lion introduced full disk encryption, called FileVault 2, it was a huge improvement over the original FileVault, which only encrypts a user's home folder. And because of the "creative" way FileVault was implemented, there were numerous incompatibilities, gotchas, and caveats to its use. FileVault 2 on the other hand, encrypts individual disk blocks so the encryption is invisible to the file system and really doesn't get in the way of normal use. Adding to this is another new feature in Lion: the recovery partition and the network recovery system introduced in last year's hardware. In almost all cases, these new features will work together without trouble. Still, there are a few things you should know, especially if you use encrypted Time Machine backups and if you can't depend on fast Internet connectivity to be available should your boot drive fail. My tale of woe But first, let me tell you the sad story of how I repaired some disk errors on my MacBook Air's SSD.
