Ladies and gentlemen, I'm delighted to share a guest tutorial today from Lorraine (LiEr) Teigland of Ikat Bag. She's a former physics teacher, which speaks volumes about the smart projects her creative brain concocts. (Her pig and chicken patterns kill me.) Today's project is a book strap. I must admit I sheepishly had to ask Lorraine how to use this fancy item: does one grab the long end of the strap and use it like a handle, so the book stack dangles from it like a dog on a leash?
Sling Bag Tutorial - Part 1
I tend to have a short attention span when it comes to projects, that's why I like making a variety of things. My Etsy shop has an assortment of stuff in it for that very reason...I don't want to make the same style of the same product over and over! Bags are one of my favorite things to make when I feel like changing up the pace a little. I whipped up a few of these hobo/sling bags to put in the shop.
Oversized Owl Bag Tutorial
What you will need (I made this bag extra big, so adjust the fabric amounts according to the size you want to make): 5/8 yard heavy weight fabric for outside of bag (I used canvas)5/8 yard fabric for lining1/4 yard fabric for owl's body Coordinating scraps for owl details (eyes, beak, wings)1 1/4 yard Ribbon Magnetic snapHeat and Bond Start by Creating a pattern. I simply drew the outline of an owl on brown craft paper. My pattern was approximately 15" wide by 22" tall (at the top points).
DIY: Pyramid Wrist Bag
Holiday parties all around and you really don't want to be carrying a large handbag that makes it difficult to dance or has you worrying about keeping an eye on it when you leave it aside. That is why I love wristlets! Spacious enough to carry your necessities and small enough to keep it around your wrist at all times. My friend Kostas over at Milloo handbags was kind enough to put together this Pyramid Wrist Bag tutorial so we can all make out own little party wristlets :) This wristlet measures approx 18cm/7'' so adjust your leather size accordingly if you want a smaller or larger version.
How to make a fabric rose
It's the last stiffened fabric project and then I'm moving on! I wanted to try an oversized, realistic fabric rose just for fun. Make a template with six petals. I traced around a dinner plate and a small bowl on the back of some ugly wrapping paper. (Tip: if the paper is too curly, iron it flat and your life will be better.) I've included my feet so you can admire my cute socks.

from top of straps to bottom of bag: 50 cm / 20 inchesheight: 28 cm / 11 incheswidth: 40 cm / 16 inches I don’t know because I used leftover fabric for my bag. You can print the pattern and place it on your fabric to make an approximation. It is only one piece of pattern.
How To Sew A Reversible Tote Bag With Adjustable Strap
Having a reversible tote bag is like having 2 bags in one, now with the adjustable strap, you can have even more styling with it. Be it full length till your hip and sling across your chest, or shorten it till just below your armpit, inside out or outside in, style it with your mood and base on your outfit. I made this bag with one of my favorite fabrics. It is actually a lightweight upholstery material normally use as curtain or drape.
Small zippered bag tutorial
This bag was designed to carry a small notebook as the largest item but you can adapt it to any size. It can even be turned into an iPad or e-book reader bag. It has two external zippered pockets and 3 internal ones. It was designed to carry a sketch notebook and a number of swipe cards without needing to take them out of their pockets. Bow tie paper clips from fabric scraps
I had a couple little scraps left over from stiffened fabric projects, and after fiddling with them, I noticed they'd easily make tiny bows. Which I attached to paper clips because... I don't know why. These could work as bookmarks, on wedding invitations, Valentines, etc. Or attach the bows to hair clips for little girls or pencils for bridal shower games. I used fabric scraps, stiffener, large paper clips, a scissors, an iron, twist ties (or wire), and a hot glue gun.
