All we have to do is design the code and it will self-create. “Engineering nature to sustain our needs” is exactly what the Glowing Plant Project aims to do. How is this possible? Bioluminescence – the production and emission of light by a living organism – is the overarching concept of the Glowing Plant Project, whose team members are essentially injecting flowering plants with genes for bioluminescence. “The Glowing Plant is a symbol of the future, a symbol of sustainability and a symbol to inspire others to create new, living things,” says project leader Antony Evans. Earlier attempts to make a self-sustainable and vibrantly-glowing plant have been rather unsuccessful, but with the necessary funding, Glowing Plant believes it can eventually create a product that will forever change the concept of lighting. It's an issue we've brought up before, when Michelle Pelletier, a master's degree candidate at University of Rhode Island, came up with a paint for concrete that helps it self-heal. According to GizMag, the bacteria is triggered to start germinating when it senses the specific pH of concrete, reproducing to fill in the crack until they hit the bottom of the fissure and start to clump. "This clumping activates the cells to differentiate into three types: cells which produce calcium carbonate, cells which become filamentous to act as reinforcing fibers, and cells which produce a Levans glue which acts as a binding agent. The new strain of bacteria comes complete with a self-destruct gene that keeps it from germinating anywhere but in contact with concrete.
