Fructose Affects Your Brain Very Differently than Glucose February 28, 2011 | 260,604 views Share Glucose and fructose are both simple sugars, but scientists have long suspected there are differences in the way your body processes them. In a new study, researchers scanned the brains of nine subjects after they got an infusion of equal volumes of glucose, fructose or saline. According to the Chicago Tribune: “The researchers ... found that ‘cortical control areas’ -- broad swaths of gray matter that surrounded the hypothalamus -- responded quite differently to the infusion of fructose than they did to glucose. The Primary Bond Market and Bond Underwriting The creation of bonds is similar to the creation of stocks. Generally, a firm that wants to issue bonds will go to an investment bank for one or more of the following services: expertise and advise in creating the issue, including determining the yield and maturity;the investment bank may buy the whole issue as firm commitment underwriting, or may use a best efforts approach to sell the bonds;the investment bank may form a syndicate and/or a selling group to help sell the bonds to their institutional investors and to the public. The selling of newly issued bonds to the public constitutes the primary bond market; most of the money received in the sale of the primary issue goes to the issuer. The investment banks make a profit by selling the bonds for more than what they paid for them, which is the underwriting discount or gross spread. The Securities Act of 1933 requires that securities offered to the public must be registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Bought Deal

Alzheimer's-associated Plaques Can Form In A Day, And Alzheimer's Symptoms Soon Follow The amyloid plaques found in the brains of Alzheimer's disease patients may form much more rapidly than previously expected. Using an advanced microscopic imaging technique to examine brain tissue in mouse models of the devastating neurological disorder, researchers from the MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease (MGH-MIND), working with colleagues from Washington University School of Medicine, find that plaques can develop in as little as a day and that Alzheimer's-associated neuronal changes appear soon afterwards. "While we've known for a long time what amyloid plaques and other changes seen in the brains of Alzheimer's patients look like, we didn't know in what order and at what speed those changes occur," says Bradley Hyman, MD, PhD, director of the Alzheimer's Unit at MGH-MIND and senior author of the Nature paper.* "Understanding the rules that govern plaque formation may lead us to ideas about how to intervene in the process."
Quandary Home Page Quandary is an application for creating Web-based Action Mazes. An Action Maze is a kind of interactive case-study; the user is presented with a situation, and a number of choices as to a course of action to deal with it. On choosing one of the options, the resulting situation is then presented, again with a set of options. Working through this branching tree is like negotiating a maze, hence the name "Action Maze". Action mazes can be used for many purposes, including problem-solving, diagnosis, procedural training, and surveys/questionnaires. Quandary is only available for Windows (although it also works perfectly on Wine under Linux). The Quandary site has now been moved to the University of Victoria.

SMOB - #Semantic #MicrOBlogging How To Drag and Drop Images In Google Docs ‹ Edudemic Source One of the biggest benefits to using Microsoft Word instead of Google Docs has been the drag and drop interface. Simply plop an image file onto your Word .doc and, like magic, it usually appears ready to be tweaked and prodded. When writing a document, it often helps to augment text with images and diagrams. But sometimes the exact image you need is on your desktop and you just want to add it to your document quickly.
