Murphy's technology laws Logic is a systematic method of coming to the wrong conclusion with confidence. Whenever a system becomes completely defined, some damn fool discovers something which either abolishes the system or expands it beyond recognition. Technology is dominated by those who manage what they do not understand. If builders built buildings the way programmers wrote programs, then the first woodpecker that came along would destroy civilization.

Kissing Sailor - Found at Last Glenn Edward McDuffie knows why the sailor kissing a white-clad nurse in that famous photo has his wrist bent back in an awkward position. Taken August 14, 1945 in New York City's Times Square moments after the crowd there heard World War II had ended, that photo has epitomized the jubilant mood of a nation who had won our hard fought victory. Glenn knows why that sailor has his wrist twisted because he is that sailor. Glenn had come to New York after coming off the SS Alexander Lillinton with Jack Holmes (from Pittsburg), the sailor in the dark uniform seen laughing in that same photo. Now ready to turn 80 this August 3rd, Glenn wants to celebrate the 62nd anniversary of his kiss of an overjoyed nurse by setting the record straight. "I rode the subway into Times Square, got off, and when I walked up the stairs, a woman at the top said she was so happy for me. Glenn will turn 80 this August 3, 2007.

Children take shelter drawing an air raid, near Minsk, 1941, part of a largely unseen Russian archive. Now, the Russian International News Agency has an enormous archive of photographs spanning many decades, many of which have never been seen before. It has recently committed to making part of this archive open to the public and to this end has started a project known as Eternal Values. Above, citizens of Leningrad leave their houses after a particularly brutal bombing raid in 1942. A mechanic inspects a plane while a young soldier uses a stencil to add another kill star to its side, taken on the southwestern front in 1942. September 1941 and as the war progresses, universal conscription means that women as well as men must undergo military training. April 1942 and Leningrad is under siege. Yet despite the siege there must be some light hearted moments. In 1941 the whole country began to fully mobilise. Everyone, even the young, were expected to play their part.
