Welcome to Literacy! My name is Kersti Börjars and I am a professor of Linguistics at the University of Manchester. Together with one of our students, Alex Webb, I have put together these web pages about language. ‘Linguistics’ you may wonder, what on earth is that?! Well, sometimes the word ‘linguist’ is used for people who are good at learning foreign languages, but that is not the way we use it here.

“You’re Lying”: a Game to Practise Present Perfect Simple and Past Simple
Today I’m really happy to introduce a guest writer to you. Angeles Jimenez is a friend and fellow teacher from EOI Oviedo and, in this blog post, she will be sharing with us an excellent communicative game to consolidate the use of present perfect simple and past simple. Ready for a lot of fun! Do you want your students to keep their noses in the course book?
Vocabulary test
In this test you get 100 letter sequences, some of which are existing English words (American spelling) and some of which are made-up nonwords. Indicate for each letter sequence whether it is a word you know or not by pressing the F or J key. J: YES, I know this word F: NO, I don't know this word The test takes about 4 minutes and you can repeat the test as often as you want (you will get new letter sequences each time). Advice! Do not say yes to words you do not know, because yes-responses to nonwords are penalized heavily!

Pathways to Accuracy: “Somewhere Only We Know” – On the same page
At the beginning of “Somewhere Only We Know” (Keane, 2004), the singer walks “across an empty land” and knows “the pathway like the back of my hand.” In this activity, the students find their way through the maze to read and understand the lyrics of the song while facing a series of challenges related to grammar and sentence structure along the way. The use of articles and possessive adjectives, or differences such as “been”/”gone” or “say”/”tell”, are some of the questions that the students will need to solve as they connect the words with a pencil or a highlighter. The students are also asked to fill in the circles with a suitable preposition. Depending on the level of the students, the prepositions that they are allowed to use can be provided beforehand (although here I’d have them think of an answer first or leave it blank if they don’t know it, check it later when they listen to the song, and then discuss any other possibilities.) Teaching grammar without a book: third person singular
Since I posted a lesson about inversions a while back, I have been thinking about writing more about grammar. I haven’t used many coursebooks recently, so I figured a personalized grammar lesson may interest other teachers. While working in a Celta course, I usually only observe candidates teaching. However, if a candidate doesn’t show up for his or her teaching practice, I need to step up and fill in the void so that other candidates’ lessons are not affected. The lesson I’m sharing today is one I prepared for such an occasion.
